The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

There's a neighbor with HRIRs down the road from me and he's got 11-15 week pullets that have pink combs and decent-sized wattles. That's why I mentioned that the one posted may be a pullet as well.
If so I'll be a monkey's uncle!

The HRIR are supposed to have a medium comb as described in the standard of perfection.

These birds already have acheived that medium. Are you sure your neighbour doesn't have a different type of RIR? True heritage RIR females have combs that are like this full grown:

.... I guess I'll just wait? lol I'm hoping pullets though, they defiantly don't act like roosters, and have never crowed.

Mumsy I am so sorry. That is very strange!

My chicken is fighting me, but seems to be going downhill. Regurgitated some things when I went in to check on her a few minutes ago. She did poo and boy did it stink in there! My husband isn't going to be happy when he gets home. Ok, I am done with natural, calling the feed store or a vet to see what i can get for sour crop. Didn't want to go back in the crate either.

Crowing at 11 weeks is not typical for males. It's not uncommon, but wouldn't be considered average.

On a general timeline, I find roosters start to crow around 14-20 weeks. Sometimes even later. The earliest I've had was 10 days, but he hasn't crowed since.

At least I was there and know it is a boy even if he's quiet now. :p

Yeah, he's got HRIR flock that he advertises for chicks locally. Idk - I can see the roo too, I guess the color and size threw me.

Salt, I've got a mixed flock now that are roughly 13-14 weeks old now and I've only got one roo, an Aussie, that's attempting to crow. It sounds hilarious. Once he gets it perfected though, he'll be as loud as a trumpet! LOL

Pooping is VERY good.

Stuff is getting through.

Massage her crop top to bottom to dislodge anything that could be making the food sit and ferment in her crop.

Some really severe cases have used monistat, but I would cull before doing that.

Ok thanks. I will let her rest and then try again in an hour or so. I thought so but was so worried when she threw up when I picked her up. She hadn't done that before.
