The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I have NEVER heard of anything like this. Pictures would be very interesting, though I am sorry bird is suffering. He needs to be culled immediately.. but pictures from necropsy are needed.
Yes. I will post pictures soon. The bird's eyes are still open and it's standing but I can't stand to see it suffer. I need pictures of the swelling. When it's dead that will disappear. Even it's head has blown up with swelling. Unbelievable!

The bird is in an isolation cage in the greenhouse with a heat lamp. It's eyes are open and clear. It stopped gasping and is standing still. I had always hoped this bird was a pullet. It is one of the largest and nicest of my twenty two HRIR. The comb and wattles are smaller than the other cockerels but larger than most of the pullets.

I need to end it's suffering now. I can't and won't keep a bird from this strain for breeding that exhibits any weakness.

When I touch this bird, it feels like a balloon filled with air. Strangest symptom I've ever seen. The bird showed no signs of illness. Just that strange waddle over the weekend and now this.

There is no poo on the vent or on the cage floor. The bird's comb and wattles are not swollen. It's eyes are clear and focused.

The one we have at home is the size of a huge jar of pickles. We haven't run out and we've been using the same jar for 5 months now.

That is insane!! Way worse than I imagined.

It does look like a pullet, which is even more of a shame :(

I fed the flock their FF this morning. We had heavy drenching down pour for the last few days. Over the weekend I moved birds around. Everyone seemed to be doing fine. But....There was this one large HRIR what I think is a cockerel that seemed to be walking with a straddle. Not paralyzed but definitely walking different than the rest.

This morning after feeding and observing everyone eat, that one bird was standing apart. It looked poofy. Not ruffled feather poofy but balloon poofy. As I watched it, it seemed to blow up even more! I picked the bird up and it felt like a balloon chicken! Never seen anything like this. The bird is gasping. It's entire body from head to thigh is swelling. It seems it will die very soon. I'm afraid it will explode! I'm not making this up and I've never seen any thing like it. Of course my camera battery was dead. I'm charging it now to get pictures soon. Any idea from anyone here what may be going on with this bird?
An air leak in her respiratory system. Can happen to humans too (I've seen it in humans), that severe of a leak doubt there is anything you can do, you could try piercing the skin and letting the air out, if it were a more mild leak that would give the body time to heal the leak, but w/ a bad leak there likely isn't enough time. As to why she has the leak, that I don't know. The humans I've seen it in got a tear in the trachea and were on mechanical vents that kept pumping the air in, or got their tracheostomy dislodged and same thing vent kept pushing the air in. Most likely in her she had an unseen issue w/ her lungs (pneumonia, infection, bruise) that formed a bleb that ruptured would be just a guess on my part though (roughly the equivelant of a collapsed lung in a human)

If you do the necropsy, keep the lungs and trachea as intact as possible, my guess is one of those two will have an injury or hole.
