The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I have some friends that lost everything in tornado all but one hen killed. I,m going to keep the hen till they rebuild. Should I quarantine her in sick bay or just separated in coop brooder so she has some company. Appreciate any and all advice on this subject.
I would still quarantine. Do you have a hen that you are willing to sacrifice? That way the extremely lucky hen will have someone for company while you wait to be sure she is ok. She has to be very stressed. I'd be giving her electrolytes in her water. Other's can help with ideas for distressing. You are a very kind person. Thank you.

X2 - so sad they lost them all, so nice of you to help out

Ah! That's sad, but its something us tornado alley people have come to live with... :-(
I'm a natural chicken keeper as well! Yah!! We need more people who understand the more we mess with our/pets/animals foods for profit/production yields/shipping the more unhealthy it becomes!!!

adorable

as for the person who mentioned sand and no bugs, well there are ants and some other tiny bugs that live in my child's sand box. We have to flood the think at least once a week to drown the bugs or he get bites. We covered it a few times and everytime we uncover it in the morning the bugs are all on top and ready to flood.

Oh...I forgot about that! My kid's sand boxes were always full of sand bugs too. Those things bite!!! We get them up at the Lake Michigan dunes too. You try to sit down on the sand during some parts of the year and you get eaten. Hmmmm... never thought of those getting in animal bedding. Yikes

Hey stony, delisha, hot rod and all, you were right!! it was the heat. by morning there was not one single pasty butt, and i just came home from work to find just the last teeny tiny sfh chick needing help. I think he has a problem all of his own, probably the same thing that his now gone sister had.

thanks again

Just in case anyone is needing a good laugh...
