The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Update:
The Golden Laced Polish did not make it thru the night...

If any of this makes no sense, sorry, working on little sleep. I could not shut off my brain last night. I gave myself the needed day off of work today and canceled all weekend plans to catch up on rest and help the 4 injured.

My heart really reaches out for you. I have seen loss with my flock as well, but it was many years ago and time has dulled the pain. Warmest sympathies and much comfort.

Gwen is either younger, a runt, was picked on and/or was sick when I got her but she's really putting on the weight now.

Hey, I resemble those remarks!

Gwen

I actually found a feed store in the next city with Nu Stock. I didn't know that we had any feed stores around here. It;s the same difference away as TSC, who does not have it.

Application procedures? I know where a glove. How much and how often do I apply. I have vet wrap but should I leave that off until it is time for them (hopefully) to go back in the coop with others. They'll be together but separate if it all works out this weekend.

Also, My one that has lost a lot of skin on her side, I imagine I should cover as well with Nu Stock? Wrap it since it is a bigger area, just skin and feathers missing. She does have a couple deep punctures around it but not too deep.

I see flesh and fat on them, but nothing deep enough to any organs.

I watch city folk who own chickens here buy that. Crazy expensive eggs

I resemble that remark! (Lol). My husband asked how much our eggs were going to cost and I quoted him something I read on BYC: the first dozen will be about 3 grand; after that they are all free!

Lynn, I am so sorry about your flock. I am glad you found the Nu Stock (although I don't know how to apply it) and hope they all heal up nicely.

LynnEBC when you get a chance be sure and buy some BluKote at your farm store if you don't have it. You will need it to disquise the wounds when you put them back together, and they may do better the sooner they have companions. BluKote has alcohol and gentian violet (an anti-fungal) in it. It gets purple all over everything, but it does eventually wash off. It lasts for several days on the chickens and they won't peck since they can't see red.

A lot of people have trouble squeezing the Nustock out of the tube since the sulfur in it turns to concrete. Many have said they just emptied it into small jar and stirred it well or added some oil to it and it thinned a bit. Vaseline would work since that is the base of neosporin.

Just a quick tip: I found it much easier to use the tube Nustock if you shake the devil out of it first. I mean shake and keep shaking for a good bit. Otherwise you will open it and the separated mineral oil will run out everywhere...

I had a young BO get flogged on her head about 2 and a half weeks ago. Blood everywhere, one eye almost refused to open. She was basically scalped.

I coated her in the runny Nustock (this was before I realized shaking the tube really helps). Anyway, as of today her wounds are all completely healed over. She still looks bald (feathers haven't regrown yet), but no longer scalped. I did not bandage her - ever - but chose instead to let the gash breathe.

Just slather the Nustock on fairly thick and keep them separated from the others if possible. Then just give them some time. Good luck!

Oh, and IME, I only applied the Nustock (thickly) once right after the injury occurred. The stuff stayed caked on for several days (maybe almost a full week?) before she scratched it off. I had her completely separate at the time from any of the others. I would think for your more severely injured that you would want to reapply once or twice, about every 5-6, maybe 7 days. Hope that helps...
