The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

They should be OK with both of them..you know the sound of cold chicks. 90 chicks should be OK for at least a week with that you have. Next week you might have to reevaluate. They will double size and outgrow the area covered. Daytime will always be OK..its the nights.

Update:
I moved the one in shock, my BO, into the coop since she would not eat or drink and kept walking to the door, like in a daze. When I went in the coop, I did my chicken call that I usually do to gather them and got the others to come out of the coop and threw scratch down like I usually do and she started pecking a little at it, ate a little wet food and a little scrambled egg and drunk water. She really needed to be in familiar surroundings. She still stands in a daze and her left eye is still shut but she ate and drank!

We went back to check on her and she actually got up on her place on the roost. She was one of the 3 who roosted on the bottom roost and the other two died so she is all alone on the roost, but she's roosting. Not out of the woods yet, but better. If we kept her inside, she would have starved herself.

The 2 injured BR's are best buddies too, I let the one that can move walk around and she went to lay beside her more injured sister.

They'll be moving to the coop tomorrow, but I'll separate them inside for a few days. The more injured BR may not make it until tomorrow, but there's still hope for her since she is trying to move and is eating a drinking.

I'm not sure if you guys want to hear all these updates or not but it helps me out to post on here and you all give such good advice after you read my post.

Thank you, Lynn

They sounded cold at first because they had yet to warm up, but they were spread out more when we just went down to check.

It doesn't look like 90 chicks at all. Must be because there is so much space. They are already running to and from either side of the pen. :)

Most of us want to see and hear updates. If you can..please take pictures of your birds during the recovery. It will be good for you..and for so many other people who have this type of experience and read about how they are doing and how you did it.
We can be here for you..for some small token of support..you have to do the hard part.

Yes - please keep those updates coming! This is a learning experience for all of us. I'm keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that your remaining survivors make full recoveries.

And I sure hope someone gets that dog!!!

That's why I am still in AZ - can't STAND humidity!! Especially on days like today (105 in Northern AZ!!!!) - the swamp cooler is struggling...

We have a lot of flies here this year too. On the AZ thread, people in Phoenix said the flies were extra bad this year too. I just put out some of the sticky fly paper strips - seems to have helped some. I am also going to try to spray LAB again soon and see if that deters them at all???

I noticed it's the moisture that attracts them more - they are more numerous where the ducks are than the chickens.

Thanks country girl! It has been really wet here. Last year we had a drought. This year it is flooding. Luckily I haven't noticed them in the coop or even in my house, just outside when I go out. I guess I will try the labs too. I've been thinking about it, just haven't actually done it. One more thing for my hubby to shake his head at me for. :)
Thanks for the recipes aoxa. I added some lavendin, peppermint, and tea tree essential oils to some organic soybean oil before I went out to gather some grass clippings for the chicken run. So far, no new bites. I want to get some catnip or eucalyptus oil, but this is what I had on hand so I figured it was worth a try. I get awful welts from black tiger mosquitoes. And that seems to be all we have here lately.
Lynn- I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Loose dogs are my number one predator fear here. We have lots of hunting dogs in our neighborhood and very few fences. So frustrating and irritating to deal with stray or dumped or loose animals. We currently have a stray tom cat that is frequenting our garage. He is not welcome, but we can't get close enough to catch him to get rid of him. Please keep us updated on your poor girls.
