The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Mumsy is called split feather because there is space between the wing & body?
The Split wing looks like two wings on one. Slipped wing with the twisted feather is harder for me to spot. I have a Silkie chick that I'm watching for this. I think Slipped wings and twisted feather are more common. I've personally not seen a Split wing yet. Thank ful for that. Silkies take a long time to mature completely so I won't be quick to cull until she matures to egg laying age. I think all of these deformities would be hard to judge in chicks. For me any way.

Squirrel tail is very common in straight run hatchery roos. Crooked keel I think as well. Big hatcheries just don't care about conformation. You'll also see lots of side sprigs and weirdness in combs in general in hatchery run. That's been my experience where I live.

Rose Comb.

Single Comb.

I never used to care what the combs were like when I first started raising chickens. What I have learned is if you want to sell your birds for top $ then you need to cull for defects. Comb defects are one of the hardest things to breed out of a messed up flock. It can take years and years. Better to start off without defective combs to begin with.

I have leghorn in my lines and I have a folded comb in one on my hens. It also can be considered as a lop sided comb.
According to my SOP 1992, female Leghorn combs are depicted this way. Male combs are depicted without drooping at all.

These combs are considered correct for female Leghorns in 1992. I don't know if it is still this way.

She is a pretty girl! Looks like the medium variety.

Just for a nice comparison here are the SOP images of correct male Leghorn combs @1992.

I've always guessed my Production Red Johnny is half RIR and half Brown Leghorn. His comb is much like the medium Leghorn in this image. His comb has a double seration. Not a disqualifying defect but he is a mixed breed anyway. I want to have offspring from Johnny but would not keep any of his sons other than for freezer camp.

I keep all of my cockerels for freezer camp too. Well all except for this one. For some reason my DH seems to think he is special. I can't convince him otherwise. I have Heritage RIR in the bator now, and the cockerel we have now can stay till his replacement is old enough. I guess I need to hope of a dang cockerel for the first time. That is kind of odd.
