The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Thanks Justine.... My hen with the Bumblefoot is PANTING & laying down and resting a lot .... I gave her another foot soak and changed her bandages and got out the oxine and the humidifier .... I am turning the bathroom into a "tent". My question is how often did you fog your hen?? and for how long??? Also I just have a standard humidifier that I got at costco... Do you think that is good enough?? ie: particles small enough?? I tried misting her ... but she got very wet :)

The black scabs on the pads of her feet don't look any different.... I don't think her feet look swollen... but I wonder if I am wrapping them too tight with the vet wrap... IS that possible???

Thanks!
Yes you can wrap too tight with vet wrap.

I had Gigi in the 'tent' for 3 days straight. It says in an article to do it 5 or 6 times a day for 15 minutes, but I don't have time for that, so I left him in the kennel all day (it was very roomy - big enough for a full grown Henry), It was the only way to make sure he inhaled it.

You didn't want to go through with the bumblefoot scab/core removal? At least remove the scab so you can pack the infection with nustock.

When I took care of bumblefoot, I wrapped the vet wrap very loosely. Just enough to keep it on and give some protection to the foot. First I put ointment on, then a cotton gauze square over that, then wrapped loosely.

This is for all of you genetically minded people.
I just got asked a really thought provoking question about my chickens. The guy happened to see a few of the barred rock boys I got in the pan fry deal and asked me if I had any in red. Is there a red and white stripped chicken breed out there? If not is there a good method to try and produce a red and white chicken. My guess is that the guy was looking for a new way to show his support for his former university.

Aoxa -
I wanted to do one of the bright colors but I thought the other kiddos would pick at it if it was bright. So I picked the one that would not draw attention as bad.

I LOVE some of the funny ones that have prints on them.

I didn't worry too much. Margaret was all alone. Only she could pick at them :p

I was just teasing you ;)

Margaret still thinks she is a human. She preened herself on my lap as I took pictures this evening. She is not a chicken.. Nope..

Here is one photo I got tonight. I went out too late and it was darkish.. so a lot of the photos are blurry.

This one turned out well. These are some wild Mallards that spent the entire day on our property. I fed them and they let me get pretty close to them. The last time we had ducks visit us was spring, and there was a male, but they were quite skittish compared to these girls. The first trio would fly away when I even talked. These guys tolerated me yelling for Koda to round up the goats and everything. There were three girls today, but one flew away (the other two didn't follow). I had named them, Duck, Duck Goose.. but I guess Goose didn't like her name.
