The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

is that food in the bed?

Yes...only because I put it there for the photo. Mom called baby out and helped her break up pieces to eat.

Del...do you think I'm crazy to try to add chicks? I hear a lot of people are successful putting them under at night but I also hear others are not so lucky. I thought if all goes well I'd place them at night then get up early to observe how things are going. If not well I would remove them all and just brood them away from mom....

But...I don't want her to reject the current baby.... what a dilemma....I think baby would be better w/hatch mates.... am I wrong?

if it was incubated I would definately get a chick or two with out reservation. It is ruff growing up alone. Getting a chick now you risk the mom rejecting anything you place under her. I would stick a few eggs under her if you make this decision to get chicks. Than transfer live ones at night.

I love this thread! Mumsy, I really enjoyed your photos, and Leah's Mom, the momma and baby are
so cute!

The SOP info is so good! I can barely keep up with this thread, but I am learning so much.

I had to rehome my two Cuckoo Marans cockerals today and the gentleman who took them told my husband that he wasn't expecting them to be so big and healthy looking. I was real proud to hear that and I directly attribute it to the knowledge I've received on this thread in particular. Thank you all so much.

Psst! Leah's Mom! I'm the Mom of a Leah too! :D

I've been playing around and put together some more images of disqualifying conformation.

Even if a person doesn't show their poultry, these deformities are genetic and are undesirable in breeding a healthy dual purpose flock. I can put up more if it's desired. edited to add: No copyright infringement is intended. These images are for educational purposes only.
Excellent diagrams! Thanks for sharing them.

can my chicken live in my house?
can I feed my chicken corn or dog food?
Is my chicken a rooster?
Is my chicken a vegan?
When will my chicken lay an egg?
Do I have to wash my eggs?
Will I get salmonella?
Why does my dog eat chicken poop?
Will he get worms?
How often should I worm my chickens?
My hen has stopped laying eggs for 6 months, how can I get her to start laying again.
Great ones!

Though not sure the answer to that one.

I don't think you're crazy. I have added chicks every single time without issue. The baby will be fine alone though. At least until she weans it.. then that one baby will be lonely.

See, another reason I am so grateful that I can learn from people who have the knowledge. I would have never thought of that, and it makes a world of sense!

Took me only 2 cups of coffee to catch up on the 72 pages I missed while driving my DS back to University.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone!
