The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

You might want to take a look at Harvey Ussery's book and website.  His book is the best "modern" book that I've seen on a more natural approach to chicken keeping.  There is a whole section on his website about feeding the flock which is also in the book.  Definitely worth reading.

This link is to the section on feeding but there are a lot more articles on other items.

Here is the book.

This article may be of particular interest.

I've read at least some of the information at the link before ... I was extremely put off by the tone he took with the person writing in for advice in Part One of the Making Your Own Feed section. So I remember it being hard for me to keep reading.

I'm going to read it all again ... I'm in the process of reorganizing stuff here ... One of the things I'd like to change is my feeding program ...

Thanks for reminding me about this resource.

Broody should be hatching any time now during this weekend. I feel like I'm "watching a pot that isn't boiling".

It is always so exciting to have a new hatch..I just had another one myself..

She is still over protective and attacks my shoes when I get too close. She has two silkies, a BLRW, and two project Orpingtons.
She is a leghorn cross..and a great mother. She teaches them to hunt so well. She has not taken them out yet, but i am sure it will be soon. This is the first time she voluntarily hatched in the coop. Normally she hatches in the woods and I have to go get her and lock her up. The coyotes and hawks are busy here and she must have understood that.

Quote: The Wisconsin lady.

He might have responded differently, however i understood his point. He did not understand her reasoning and her blunt statement about his statement. He was probably offended.

Almost all of my chickens have been moved to the coop in the barn! Theive been put in "Jail" for a month due to going into the neighbors garden and hollowing out their tomatoes(OOPS) so once the tomatoes have been harvested they will be allowed to free range again so figured it was time to move them to the large barn as they have completely outgrown the small coop and would have probabaly plucked each other bare in there from boredom.

Thought I would share this natural cure here too

Gramma Chick, this was shared on Facebook and this forum seems like the perfect place to pass it along. It may help your burn to heal.

"Keep in mind this treatment of burns is being included in teaching beginner fireman. First Aid consists of first spraying cold water on the affected area until the heat is reduced which stops the continued burning of all layers of the skin. Then, spread the egg whites onto the affected area.

One woman burned a large part of her hand with boiling water. In spite of the pain, she ran cold faucet water on her hand, separated 2 egg whites from the yolks, beat them slightly and dipped her hand in the solution. The whites then dried and formed a protective layer.

She later learned that the egg white is a natural collagen and continued during at least one hour to apply layer upon layer of beaten egg white. By afternoon she no longer felt any pain and the next day there was hardly a trace of the burn. 10 days later, no trace was left at all and her skin had regained its normal color. The burned area was totally regenerated thanks to the collagen in the egg whites, a placenta full of vitamins."
THE INCREDIBLE EDIBLE EGG -
It WORKS ...I took a Cold Egg out of the frig & separated it. With a paper towel slathered some of it on ...almost instant ..RELIEF .
It has calmed the redness & removed ALL PAIN . i SLEPT FINE NO PAIN
I have some bubbling / blisters on the skin ...but no pain whatsoever ..TOTALLY AMAZING

My chicks are still young (7 wks). So I'm still using chick feed. But I also get free produce from a local store. The last box I got had, assorted lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, and watermelon...all stuff the couldn't sell. And not a darn thing wrong with any if it! In fact I could have fed my family some of it. Their water had ACV in it. They won't drink it if its not. I also buy them plain Greek yogurt. My girls are so spoiled! lol

Incredible! Thanks so much for sharing. I have to mentally file that one!!!

I get produce that way too. I'm hoping they keep providing it throughout the winter. If it's in good shape we either use it or I dehydrate it (such as apple, peach, etc. slices/leather). It's a really god-send!

I asked our local grocery store about this, and they don't do it :( I was sad because it would be such a great resource. I'm hoping to find somewhere to get pumpkins cheap this fall. I planted 50 vines and not a one grew taller than six inches.

Oh that's to bad. It just amazes me how much produce goes to waste! When I went to pick up my box, the guy took me back into the walkin and said pick one! There were like ten boxes all stacked if produce they couldn't sell...all because we as consumers have been basically brainwashed into thinking what we buy has to look perfect!
I see you are in NY, are there any farmers markets, you could check out?
