The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I'm giving up on my search for a sulmtaler rooster. there are hardly any breeders in the us, and they are incredibly expensive. Maybe i can save up for some hatching eggs next spring. I am loving this breed!

aoxa your pennies look great. I have one that looks similar but we call it a red star. I just thought that was a cool name for ours since it was a red sex link. The hatchery that sold me it calls them golden buffs but lists red star as an alternate name for the mixed chicks. I'm hoping my red star starts laying in 4 weeks or so.

I was able to sell off my production laying hens on CL really really fast. I thought they would sit and sit but nope they are all gone. I did not want to keep them during the winter so I'm happy but now I'm back to watching for eggs as all of my hens are just not quite laying yet.

What you don't want to buy them for $99 each from greenfire? I would go with eggs too, but maybe see if there are any entered in a show somewhat close to you. There might be a pet quality rooster available from some one showing off their great chicken. And who wouldn't show off one of those roosters they have a majestic look to them.

Ok so I was out raking the coop this morning & picked some kale to put in the hens treat ball. It's tied to their roost with old twine. I had to untie it to lower it & much to my surprise there was a spider and tiny little red bugs. I'm hoping baby spiders and not mites?? I've never seen anything on my girls and I do check periodically. I sprayed the roost down with the eucalyptus oil/water mix I keep in the coop to spray down the wood items. But I never even thought to spray the bottom of the roost before

I want to spray the wood stuff down with neem oil this weekend. What I have is a small bottle of neem oil from the store. Anyone know how much I delete the essential oil down to water for a spray bottle full?

Oh and I put wood ashes in the plastic dog crate outside for them to dust bath in to. They don't use it to hide under so I put it back together so hopefully the ashes stay dry in the rain.

Thanks !

sounds like red mites..they are usually not visible on chickens, they live in the coop and feed of them at night.

Thank you..

I am going to be working hard on lacing, and black base color..they are great for type and can't take credit at all. I have one Gold laced Blue and I am not sure how I am going to work with that yet. I might use it to add size to my Dotties.
