OMG I had to stop sprouting because of the Fruit Flies!!! I just started up again and those buggers are back in full force!!! UGH! Weirdly they don't seem to go to my FF bucket which is open and in my kitchen.....

I gave in and since I don't drink wine anymore, put some live vinegar into my wine aeration bottle (sort of a big butted thing) put in an apple slice on a piece of wire, and added a funnel at the top made from an attractive bit of PostIt note... I have cleaned hundreds of fruit flies out, and it's finally manageable. Going to be a permanent fixture in the house now!
I also have clear sprouting bins with clear lids, so that helps a little.

I did an inadvertent experiment when I had an infestation of fruit flies. First I used un-pasteurized apple cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap in a teeny bowl. It attracted and drowned fruit flies like a champ. Then I put out (same places, different days) pasteurized ACV and not nearly as many dead flies. Could be a coincidence, but I'm sticking to the UN-ACV when I need to kill fruit flies from now on.

I have wanted Buff Orpingtons so badly, drove to Seneca Falls, over 1 1/2 hours from me because I was told they had some. They had 1. They just aren't available around here. A man came to get one of my BCM roo's and offered me an unbelievable amount of money for my 1 hen. It appears that he has a neighbor with 4 hens and 1 roo BO. He's going to try to get some eggs in the spring. He'll provide the eggs and food until we can sex them and I will hatch and raise them. I didn't think it was a bad deal providing he comes through. I didn't have much luck with shipped eggs but may try again
