The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Whoever said maybe her eye is still there, bingo. I was totally wrong! It is unscathed, but she definitely caught the muscle around it on something. She has a big black eye and it's bruised with a scratch. I was so relived to see her iris when I got home today! We decided to call her Woneyera (one-eye-ra). She deserves a name...

Yippee!

Books

Go to Gutenberg.org and search for "Poultry by Hugh Piper". There are a lot of good old books free on that web site.
thank you! I would not have thought of looking there, and I spend so much time hunting up different university and extension sites and looking at their old items.

thats great!

I have a icelandic pullet who suddenly appeared one morning looking scalped - no comb and weird raw skin at the top of one eye. Not bloody, not oozing, .....just....almost like white scar tissue. I think she lost her vision in that eye because she always has her head turned one way to see out of the other. Nothing looks wrong with the eye....and I have no idea what happened to her. She is skittish but has always been skittish, think it is an icelandic thing.

Delisha any suggestion on how often to feed meat protein to help in molting? They get fish meal daily with their grains but I think more than that is needed.
I honestly do not boost for moult..I personally feel moulting is normal and natural and I do not want to interfere with nature. I want the chickens to stop laying and rest and take the time they need. I too worry about pathetic looking chickens and how miserable they look all hunched up in the blowing snow. I also want strong healthy chickens that recover fully after a moult with out my manipulations. I feed a lot of meat regardless of moult at this time of year..and that is only because they are not out as much as they were and because of the Hawks i have not let them free range as much as i would like. They are out of the compound if i am outside for any length of time. On coop day the fence is opened for most of the birds. I have yet to let my gold laced orps or my dotties free range..I am too chicken. I am just fortunate I have a large fenced in compound.
