The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

We get a lot of snow , if that helps....

Not really. I live near San Antonio Tx, and have always wanted to try somewhere with snow. Our high today was 80

What part of the world are you in?

Twin Lakes is about 20 miles north of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. We have to remove snow from our road, decks, walkways and patio....a lot...think of having to come home after working in it ALL DAY and spend another couple of hours working with it at home. I'm a truck driver so it gets old sometimes.

Woneyeda's eye is back to normal. I can't believe it. She is with the flock and is not blind. She just had a scratch inside the lid that got all swollen up. :)

You all have been great on here, and so helpful and supportive. I have taken a lot from this thread and all that led to this first little egg!!!!!

So some skin looks like it's actually missing? Doesn't paint a pretty picture but they can be tough. Wishing her a speedy recovery.
Take a picture and post it..hard to guess by your discription. Sometimes it is not as bad as you think.

No, Scott... your comment about a lot of snow does not dampen my lust after your beautiful view! I'm in central ME, and we sometimes get buried!

Chicalot: In addition to the concern about your poor bantam, I'd be asking how this happened? You may have a predator problem that needs to be addressed.

I tried to multiquote but have to figure that one out yet as I'm usually always using my phone..

She drank some electrolyte water. I'll try for a pic in the a.m. We decided to leave her be for tonight and not get her riled. I was hoping it was a small hole that could be treated but I'm guessing on further inspection tomorrow she might be put down.

No shortage of predators here but I suspect a cat as coyotes and such usually don't show up in mid-afternoon. I posted a few days ago a pic of cats sunbathing on my porch .. there all pretty much feral but fed by my dad who is also my closest neighbor. One of the toms is coming of age and will be rehomed if i can get him caught as he's on my list of top suspects. Our outside dog didn't sound off which makes me think cat but the other dog was napping in the laundry room. We've had such good luck with all the cats; this is very disappointing. I've harped about these cats for so long but have tried hard not to upset him because these are something I think he finds joy in since my mom's passing.

Didn't find Nustock. Found corona ointment but little to no info on using it on chickens. Might go to TSH for vetricyn spray tomorrow hoping they have some for chickens.

I went ahead and ordered Nustock from Amazon. It was deeply discounted as compared to last time I had priced it, so if anyone is running low it might be a good time to stock up.

I have feral cats around here and they never look twice at the chickens. No one is feeding them either, so they are hungry!

glad you are getting nustock, the stuff is amazing. Jezebel, who was pinned to the ground by a hawk, and had a 2 inch gash under one wing, and a deep puncture wound on the other, and went into shock, was fine after a night. Her wounds healed great, and I only put the nustock on once.

Chickens can recover from some amazing wounds. You can also try honey (never tried it, and can't imagine it with the feathers, but others have had success with it), coconut oil, an iodine and sugar paste, or an antibiotic salve that doesn't have any "caine" painkiller in it. You probably know that covering her head with a towel or cloth wll help her remain calm if you are treating her or examining her. Might be hard with her wound being on the neck...it is covering the eyes that helps.

I don't want you to think I am advocating against culling, it is a hard decision and you are the one whio will know the best. Keep us posted.
