The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I like the gravel in the water container idea..I do use rocks and should add some gravel too..

I'll let you know if it stays thawed out enough to be useful. ... it's kinda asking a lot of the dog bowl to keep the fount thawed out, out in the weather like that...
I didn't like water in the coop and figure they can drag their sorry little chicken butts out to drink. ..;-D
I'm just about done with food inside also.

Yesterday I filled the heated dog bowl with fine gravel and then topped with water to conduct the heat better. I put a double walled fount on top of this to see if it will work outside as a waterer.... no water in the coop.

That's what the one lady that wrote the review was doing except that instead of gravel, she just put plain water in it and set her fount in the water. She said it was working for her well. I like the gravel idea as it gives a good solid base.

I had tried filling the smaller one with sand to set a small waterer (chick canning jar) on but the sand didn't conduct the heat so I ended up just filling it with water and setting the waterer in it too.

Never thought of gravel with water.

My Ameracuana eggs are on the green side and I have good quality AM's. I think all SQ AMs have a touch of green in them..crack one open and if it is true all the way through..you are good to go..

Hmm I'm going to crack a bunch of eggs when I get home. I think I have seen some of mine where the interior has a thin white layer! Does this mean they have been crossed with another breed somewhere along the line? The breeder they came from shows her birds...

It could be that's just the membrane ... see if you can peel it off ... Sometimes waiting until the inside of the shell is dry changes the color a lot, so look both ways.

Just saw this on feeding venison to chickens and thought some here might be interested.  http://www.grit.com/animals/poultry...-dont-forget-your-chickens.aspx#axzz2nqoorGpo

Thanks for this! Interesting but I don't think I would take the time a make the mess to grind it up and use the muffin tins. Probably just do the same as I do to make Pupsicles for the dogs. Cut up organs into delectable bite sized pieces. Freeze on covered cookie sheet. Put in bag. Should work just fine for the birds.
Made the dogs think the sun shines out of my ... Treat bag!

Ameraucana bantam eggs in the middle, followed by silkie and a fart egg from our Lucy (naked neck). I find my AM eggs are turquoise.

Blue egg to the right is from another Naked Neck. No question it is pure Blue. :)
