The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Aoxa, today I gave DH his gift - a camera like yours - and he was wondering whether you can get much video on a 16gb memory card. He is also a bit overwhelmed at how much information is on the pdf manual that came with it, but I suspect over the next several days he will wade through it :) Do you keep an extra set of batteries for yours?
I think 16g will hold about 4 hours or so of video... not positive. usually it'll give an estimate while you're recording how long you have left...

Oh yes, you can get a lot on 16gb. I have never run out of space... I always erase them when I unload them onto the computer, so I really haven't done more than 1,000 pictures at a time at most and maybe 20 minutes of video.. I always unload them same day, but I'm sure you can get much more. I haven't ever even came close to half of the 16gb at a time.

No extra battery. Don't need it.. The battery charges so fast, and it last so long it's not necessary if you ask me.

Tell him just to fiddle around with the manual setting. I never read instructions, I am bad for that.. I just figure it out as I go. :)

Thanks to you both - when I bought it I was fairly sure he could buy other lenses for it, is that true? Like a zoom, for example? Or is that another thing that's really not necessary? This might be the first gift I've given him in 11 years that he likes.

Oh yeah - so to keep it about chickens, 1 - I expect he will take a lot of pictures of my chickens for me, and 2 - it topped 40 degrees today (43 right now, 11:10 am here), so everyone is outside, even the 2 week old chick and its broodermates a week and 2 weeks older. The two-week-olders (4 weeks old) are moving to a juvie pen when they go back in - supposed to be warmer again the next two days, getting to 60 Friday (!) so good time for them to adjust before it starts getting cold again Saturday night into Sunday. I have a lone 5 day old chick that we have been brooding inside, that one will move out to the coop brooder this afternoon so it has some pals other than us. It's a cute little blue or splash Silkie (probably splash). I have been having temp issues with my incubators (turns out the thermometers I was using, all the same brand and style, were not correct, and I was cooking my poor little embryos). This chick was in the too-high temps for the first two weeks, and I'm amazed it hatched. This week's look way better, 11 of the 16 set showed good development as of last week, so Thursday's move to the hatcher will hopefully be more productive.

If anyone is interested...there is a really great "how to" solar stock tank article that came in my email newsletter from Mother Earth News. I couldn't get the web address on my ipad, but I "pinned" the article on Pinterest. If anyone wants, pm me your email address and I'll forward the email newsletter to you. Keeps water liquid below zero in Montana, according to the guy who built it.

New camera does nicely on chick closeups :) Have to work a bit on everything in focus but these are the best chick pics ever taken in this house.
