Well, I've separated 2 from the rest but right now they are still in the hen shed where they can see everyone. I need to be sure one of our other out-buildings is night predator proof before I move them in there. And it's also supposed to be 12 Degrees tonight.

If I had a pen that was pred-proof I'd move them right now. I guess that might be a project for the future to have ready.

I know what you mean, it seems as if you can never have too many places to put chickens - quarantining, broodies, chicks, extra roosters, time out places, sick bay,......another flock......I quadrupuled the # of places to house chickens and I'm still running short. too bad sheds ( or $$$) don't fall out of the sky!

Ok either my eyes got bad quick or the size of the font shrunk a lot...........

Anyways it's been in the 20s all week but I thought I could get some of the compost into the garden tonight for the girls to kick around. I couldn't figure out what they were going nuts about until I saw Stella take off with a worm. Hundreds of worms in what compost was not frozen. Poor worms never had a chance. The girls on the other hand will all have bulging crops tonight

They were all quite happy. Even Lucy got some. Of course I grabbed a few worms & tossed them her way. I'm guessing when I go out later they will all have bulging crops :) they were out until almost dark digging thru the compost.

I'm glad the compost did so well since it's only from last fall. Hopefully the rest is just as good. Just need to wait for it to defrost. Soon as it's not so muddy in the garden I'm going to start cleaning out the coop, the DL in there is a wonderful smelling compost. There is only about 3 inches of hay on top now. I think that's pretty impressive since I put at least 3 bales of hay down since last fall along with lots of leaves and grass. The combination plus chicken poop apparently did well for breaking down into compost. When I turn it over its about 2 feet deep now of compost. Now I just need to find some free manure for the garden. :)
