The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

That makes perfect sense!
I picked up some Oyster shell today for them as well.
Be sure to put the oyster shell on a stationary container where the birds have easy access to it and likewise for a container of granite grit.

This might just very quickly solve your problem, along with adjusting the way you mix the feeds.

Again

Good Luck!

So much for the vegetarian chicken diet! JAJAJAJAJAJA

EDIT: Something to consider about the long term usage of Blu-kote. "Long-term use" will certainly mean more to some than others. In our case, 4 years is just about the max a hen will ever live on this place but once in a while, an older cock might hang around 'til he's about 6 years old.

In all earnestness, I have never used this product but I certainly might if I had the need or had it around here...(note to self...get Blu-kote)...

My point is, there quite likely have been several tests on chickens and just about every farm animal that, assuming this jives with your opinion, strutted down the gang-plank from the ARK.

So, unless we're talking about bathing the animal every day, from beak to feet, I can't see how 'long-term' could be a really important issue to most chickens, even the pets or others that live upward, into their teens.

Thanks for reading...

That is all.............

I did read...and I pretty much agree. Most people don't use it for a long time or in excessive amounts. I do take into consideration that dosages/concentrations of the active ingredients would be much less if, say, you are using it on a horse compared to using it on a chicken.

We all need to keep that in mind when using a product that is made at concentrations for large animals then using it on a chicken which is quite tiny in comparison.

Well...
I let the banned birds back into the flock today. And also removed the rooster to the banning pen to give the ladies a chance to sort our themselves.

Very interesting results so far. I think mostly positive. I'll have to write a full report after I get to watch for awhile.

See your sprained ankle is good for chicken watching duty :) hope your ankle is feeling better :)

We have been working most of the day on getting the coop ready for the new roof. I had a few things I wanted to change around & fix a few problems I knew I had. So far,so good but it's slow going.

My mom was excited because she got to watch her Stella lay an egg. She has never seen any of the hens do it before.

Ok back out to work

maybe Stella did it just for her to please her. If she is her favorite hen, they have to have some sort of special relationship.

In Blue Kote the dosage is diluted, I was referring specifically to the gentian violet undiluted.

Yep....I don't think I've sat still for so long in a long time. And I didn't sit very still I have to admit.

I drove out there so I didn't have to walk the full back and forth and sat in the car with a magazine, a broom, and a loaded pellet gun. Felt like a real "hillbilly". The broom was just in case I needed to "herd" some birds. The pellet gun is my new toy so I had to carry it...but I didn't do any target shooting because I couldn't keep walking over to the target to check my shots!
