The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I think that is a symptom of the disease, yes. The disease itself is the almighty greed and...as we already said...lack of empathy (aka selfishness)

And I wouldn't say they don't care about the consequences to the customer. In fact, I would say they entirely intend for these horrible things to happen so people can then in turn spend a fortune on healthcare items (conveniently made by their company and endorsed by the vets they instructed in universities about "animal nutrition" which they, conveniently, also wrote the curriculum for) (and no...I'm not exaggerating, I pray everyday that it wasn't true.

but it not just many selfish wealthy people that want more wealth but a few controllers of all this.

its the same with "hospitals", fairly healthy person with some small problem go's in -- bankrupt dead person comes out.

okay, night!

To tell you the truth hellbender, I was just as stunned to see them! I feed the girls FF even the State Vet told me to stop fermenting it and just feed dry; Dry feed is always available. They have 3 waterers (1 w/ACV & mother) which I fill w/clean water nightly; do deep litter in my coop but also remove a lot of solid waste, have limed, wood-ashed & DE'd the deep litter. They're 10 x 10 run is covered so they aren't in 5 inches of mud when it rains, the 6 x 10 addition is not. They cannot free range all day as I work & we've had predator issues. If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it.
For starters...Valbazen, administered by mouth or by waterer is enormously effective when prosecuted in a clinical manner.

I also spread feed-grade salt in my bird houses. This dehydrates the eggs and causes no harm to the bird's feet.

I feed FF daily, included in the regular diet, always a moist mixture. My birds carry a very low parasite load ...my flock is tested monthly by floating several fresh fecal samples..

Just a suggestion. Why not try fermenting only the grain portion of the diet? That works very well for me but I do mix a layer mash with FF at time of feeding. My feeding program is far more complicated that that but for all practical intent, my bird's feed is always mixed and served semi-moist. They love it that way too.

I tried fermenting the factory prepared stuff but there seems to be ingredients that don't take well to fermentation and are more likely to ROT...Just my observations that might help.

I'm SO glad you brought this up.
I was watching videos about Veterycin products. It lead me to a whole horrible ugly place that taught me why Veterycin was invented. Because aggro business keeps animals in horrible conditions, so they develop pink eye, umbilical hernias/infections, and countless other things. The "commercials" were in spanish, so likely filmed in South or Central America. Which leads me to another thing. Clearly there are too many laws here to prevent the testing of these items on animals in the states, so what horrible things did they test on the animals to get to where they decided to use what's basically a weak bleach solution. How concentrated/diluted has it been to see if it's effective?

WHY CANT THEY JUST NOT KEEP THEM IN THEIR OWN POOPY, MUDDY MESS AND FEED THEM RIGHT AND THE ANIMALS WON'T NEED SPRAY FOR PINK EYE!

sorry....maybe you guys should look at the YouTube for it. Tell me what you think, I'm just steaming and can't keep all my thoughts straight/organized.

Point is, I'm not sure I want to buy their products anymore. It may be a great product, but the company appears to be morally bankrupt. Maybe I'm wrong?

I see absolutely NOTHING in that video that says the animals shown are/were kept in bad conditions. I don't know much about Vetericyn products. This from Vetericyn's website:

"Vetericyn Wound and Skin Care products are not bleach. Bleach is corrosive, toxic, will burn, generates fumes/vapors and is not safe for use on the intended applications of Vetericyn. In addition, stabilized bleach has a pH of >11. Vetericyn however, is safe and non-toxic. Vetericyn products are manufactured within an appropriate physiological pH range and will not sting when applied. Vetericyn will not harm healthy tissue in the process of cleaning and debriding wounds. Vetericyn is also a shelf-stable solution."

Along the lines of all they do is kill, I can think of many animals / birds that do the exact same thing.

Quote: It might be time for you to google a timeline of the United State's history. Lots of people come from families that have been in the US since before it was the US. A good example would be British families came here as colonists and would have descendants with a history dating back prior to the US Revolution. Another not so great example would be the slaves that were forced to start a live here. Slavery was up in full force before the US Revolution too. And of course there are the Native Americans that my children love to pretend to be when playing cowboys and Indians.

I'm stunned. When the situation has deteriorated to the point you're seeing worms, it's time for a serious look at management. Sorry if my post stuns anyone else but there's enough 'stun' to go 'round.
Well, I know many many people believe a healthy chicken can keep from having a worm overload. Personally, I don't know what more I could do to have healthy chickens with strong immune systems (except to have unlimited land and unlimited time and unlimited money - I could improve with that). The run I have is large, has been used for 8 years, and has lots of wild birds and rodents in addition to the chickens.

I'm with you, CoopChick, the worms are there despite my best efforts. My run is muddy for a week or so in the spring with the snow melt, but thats about it. Run is about 75' x 40' so plenty big. I don't use DE, or lime, but wood ash is there, deep litter, good feed although not FF in the winter. I don't think you or I are managing the flocks in a way to encourage worms!

With so many birds, nothing is routine...But when I begin to notice an upsurge of eggs in the samples, which is not often...I worm EVERY bird through their water supply.

I'm trying to avoid the chemical wormer - don't want the side effects.

so, off to try Molly's~
