The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Hi, folks --

My EE has white and red earlobes, and in recent weeks I've noticed a bald area on her neck under her beard. (see pics)

I found no evidence of lice, tho I did see some areas in the back of head/neck with feather stubs. The white does not rub off.

After looking around, I am starting to think favus...

I read of Nustock as a potential treatment. Any knowledge or experience out there?

I really, really, really, really want to avoid conventional meds.

It's a little unclear to me how much of an impact this fungus can have on chickens' health, although it apparently does spread potentially/slowly to both chickens and humans. Some folks on this website have said it could threaten health to a great degree.

This link says it sometimes resolves on its own, and there were similar results among both treated and untreated birds:

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/help!
NuStock will help..I wish I had more I could offer for suggestions.

Some photos of the kiddos. Swedish Flower Hens. They'll be 7 wks in 2 days.

Looks like I got all pullets again!!! (That's twice now...last hatch was 100%...3 pullets. This looks like another 3 :D )
But...
I don't declare them pullets for sure until I see an egg.

Leahsmom, they are beautiful! THe first two definitely look like pullets, the third is an "I think so"...I know what you mean about not being positive til you see an egg.

I'm getting closer to making myself cull buster the rooster. He trounced a sulmtaler hen again, and she even squatted for him. Doesn't bother the chicks. If it weren't for him I would have one flock, so why oh why am I keeping him?

Interesting...
I decided that I'm taking out my roo. Just not sure when.

I saw him chase down one of the girls on Sunday and attack. Like yours, she even squatted for him. I just can't risk that going on regularly. I'm even now wondering if that might have been what killed the BR. It's way to hot to be chasing them down and doing evil. The girl on Sunday was stunned and didn't get up. I picked her up and carried her around while I chased Mister into a kennel pen. He has remained there since - even overnight. It is chain link so not weasel proof but I think it would keep out everything else. It is within the electric netting but the front part of the fence on the yard is not electric - only regular 4 ft chain link.

At this point I just don't care. He is NOT going back into the flock.
