The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

AFL, great that you get the daily videos - now thats a good friend!

He is my best friend. At least one video a day but most days 2! He kept them fed and brought them watermelon & corn on the cob, they love when he watches them. And everyday day a funny report on progress of the chicks. He has been dubbed Korn King when he watches them :D. He even bought a plastic owl for them when he saw the hawks one day. My crows flew the nest before we left.

@armorfirelady

How is it going with the chicks and mammas?

They are stinking cute !!!! I finally got to hold one today

(Bad pic we came home a day early from vacation due to bad storms coming. I'm not a fan of taking my pop up camper down in thunder &lightening)

The 3 we held all have leg feathering. The other 2 we didn't get a look at. 4 black chicks with yellow bottoms and one grey chick. They are starting to get real feathers on their wings already. And the little stinkers can fly up to the board covering the entrance to the compost pile. About a foot high!!! They also can get out the cattle panels to get into the veggie garden and the main yard. That's top to fix tomorrow since the dogs are back home. My friend made a ramp so they can get in the raised nesting box but they don't use it lol.

I love listening to co broodies Lucy & Sophie talk to the chicks. And even tho the chick food was being put out for them I saw in the videos mommas calling to the babies and feeding them the grains the hens get. I didn't grind them smaller and it looks like mom is breaking them up to feed to them. Same thing for the corn & watermelon. Simply adorable !!! I am still going to put chick feed out for them tho. They are adorable eating the grass and clover & digging they the compost. The moms called them into the coop early and we couldn't figure out why until we heard the thunder. They were all snuggled under the mommas for the night. Peeping away.............I find it simply amazing to been able to watch them talk to the mommas and vice versa. I'm not going to interfere at all except for putting up fencing to keep them out of the garden. I know they will fit thru the electric netting as well but it seems like the moms don't venture more than 20 ft from the coop with them. Fingers crossed they stay in.

I'll grab some pics tomorrow of them :)

@Sally8 thanks again for letting me experience the babies. It's going to be so hard to give them up. If that grey one is a pullet I might just keep her :)

@Leahs Mom sorry to hear about your BR. My hens are all out during the rain looking for worms and bugs. They tend to go in when it's thundering and lightening tho. Some nights they look like they were dunked in water from being out in the rain all day. And Stella never goes in the water bowls I put out. My BCMS are the ones I see panting first. I can't say I've seen Sophie pant in the heat. They like to lay under the a frame in the grass when it's hot. Or in the compost pile. Even my hoop coop gets hot inside with the sides and one end open and the roof vents. They don't spend much time in there in the heat of the day unless it's to lay an egg

AFL, sounds like you are enjoying the chicks. so much fun, I can't believe I never let a broody hatch before this spring.
Looks like you got a little sunburn on your camping trip!

I think if I ever do this again it will only be broody hatches. So much easier and these chicks are so healthy!! The co mommas have the chicks out this morning in the rain. So funny to watch them shake. The grass is as tall as them lol

And yes I did. That's with a sun hat & suntan lotion. I'm very pale normally and I don't tan much lol

yeah, it seems to go better with the moms brooding and not me, based on my vast experience (probably 15 batches of chicks I've brooded compared to my first and so far only broody hen raising them

). But, the 3 pullets I've been raising this spring are awfully friendly since I have to handle them to get them out and back to outdoors, and I'm pretty close to them when providing feed, water and cleaning the brooder....as opposed to the hatched ones who are pretty darned skittish around me.

I love my little pullet who comes running when she hears me outside and hops on my lap!

Mine are skittish as well. I can only grab them when they are in the nesting box.

I should be banned from clearance aisles of gardening shops........off to dig holes for the stuff I got. My mom will be pulling out the worms to feed to the hens :)
