The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

thanks everyone. Now I wonder about the little pullet and the sulmtaler that I lost in the last few months - maybe that was marek's too. And maybe mrs murphy too from last year.

Half my flock was vacinated, and half not....I guess I was asking for it.

He is definitely paralyzed in the legs and wings, eating like crazy, won't drink.... I can start the st johns wort tomorror.

Dawg53, I just researched it and couldn't find anything anywhere that listed paralysis as a symptom of worms, came here, and you beat me to it. in total agreement that it isn't worms.

still sort of hoping it is something else. but think mareks...apparently you can get a blood test in texas! why texas? going to check tomorrow with the univ of mn and see if they can do a blood test for mareks.

I just need to know. The little roo is holding his own, no change. I had started a molasses flush thinking it could be botulism, and now I'm reading he really needs superb vitamins, and it is confusing the heck out of me. My vets, who are farm vets, don't really know much about chickens.

@lalaland
I hope you can get a vet to do a blood workup. That would really set your mind at ease - whether it is or isn't Marek's. You'll be able to make a good decision about to handle the whole flock without wondering if you did the right thing or not.

Does he normally eat a pelleted food? If so, you can add water to that and whether or not you let it ferment is neither here nor there at the moment. Usually, the birds love a wet mash and at least he would be getting some liquids. Don't make it soupy, just wet, like oatmeal. You can put any liquid vitamins in there that you want.

I usually make an alfalfa tea using regular alfalfa. It is an appetite stimulant. I serve that weakened by half and they will drink a little bit. It works. You can use alfalfa tea to moisten his food too. Stir hard boiled eggs into it and some shredded cheese and maybe some fruit like small bits of apple. Yogurt too. I use yogurt quite a lot. Works wonders in times of stress.

Just had to share.
Finally after years of hatching and culling my first purebred genetically improved Rhodebars are out of the bator.
SO excited! :)
