The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I am devastated. We found out yesterday our puppy Maiden is deaf. I was noticing some odd things and when asking the vet we did some tests and she hears very little, only the high pitched sounds. Waiting to hear back from the breeder, deciding what we need to do. Sadly, her being deaf was only the second worse thing I had to deal with yesterday...crappy day.
On the chicken side, it's very windy here right now and not one chicken has left the barn. When I took the puppy out potty earlier it literally almost blew me to the ground, so of course I'm out there laughing like a maniac trying to get back to the door.
I did get that email alert today, from the place that shall not be named. I hope I continue to get them in the future.

near vancouver?? -- I love Canada -- been lobbying to move there with all the latest stuff going on in the states - but hubby can't be convinced as your weather is really no better than ours.  I'm really a canadian at heart - a  (said with affection)  we're retired, so don't need to stay near jobs anymore -- FREEDOM - sort of!!

I grew up in Vancouver, but live now 5hrs north on the coast . I'm a prairie or east coast coast girl at heart :)

I'm sorry about your puppy :(

I have no idea what email you're getting that can't be named!

I sure do like this thread! You folks are so much fun.

Thanks for sharing the excitement over Phoebe's first egg with me. I took a purple crayon and marked the date and her initials on it. Keeping the crayon tied with a ribbon to the egg carton out in the garage. Barn is too cold. I'm going to try something I've never tried before. Incubating pullet eggs. All the books I don't pay attention to any longer suggest never doing that. I figure why not? Two of my daughters are begging for chicks from Johnny and Phoebe.
While I was out shopping today, I went into the pet store and bought a German made thermometer/hydrometer combo meant for reptile cages. I set it next to the cheapo one I used for my last (less than great) hatch. Blew my brain! The cheap one is off by nearly 6 degrees lower and 10% lower with the humidity! No wonder so many chicks couldn't hatch and died! *BLET* Much too cold and wet. Now I know why. Learning learning...Always learning.

Sorry you had such a hard day and sorry about your puppy

We can say it we just can't post the link
Natural Chicken Keeping
It is a blog that was created ..it compiles all the information you find in this room in easy file format.
BDM worked her hinny off to create the blog
We are trying to incorporate it into the same thing here, but, it seems what they have is pretty difficult to work with, we are trying.

Saw this post from LacyBlues on the FF for Meat birds thread from back in October. The "natural aspirin" comment made me think of the two maybe gizzard-impacted chickens...wonder if it might help? I have not confirmed that blueberries would help with pain; just saw it and copied it.

One more benefit of blueberries is that they're high in natural aspirin. I use them whenever I suspect that one of my birds is in any kind of pain. They're also anti-diarrheal (unless you eat too many of course).

Thanks for the idea on using pumpkin for winter time Vit A! You're right, that would be very easy to incorporate in the ff.

Well, I am thinking Peep does not have an impacted gizzard, but has/had some grass blocking her digestive tract. She has pooped twice in the last 30 minutes(which is more than all day) after the EVOO treatment. It was dark green and to be honest looked like mostly grass. Gonna do some more EVOO in another couple of hours, but that seems to be helping. She is even laying down instead of standing and not doing the neck extending.

I'm so sorry you had a bad day/ I had a deaf Dalmation once. I fostered her for a few months and taught her hand signals. I was amazed how fast she picked up the cues! I ended up placing her in a home as the pet of a deaf 6-year-old girl. Happy ending!!

Well... that explains why I get some nasty hives when I eat fresh blueberries! I'm allergic to Aspirin - Mystery solved!

I'm allergic to many citrus fruits and am allergic to fruitcake. Makes me break out in hives all over. Which is a good thing. Fruit cake is so gross
