The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I saw one at our local thrift store and thought about buying, but did not- it was about $10. may have to go back today. I got some deer meat and wanted to grind it. I used my cuisinart food processor and it worked fine. mixed it with regular grass fed beef burger to made the most wonderful shepard's pie. I do have a friend with the kitchenaid attachment that I can borrow.

Thrift stores!

I need to go to them more often.

About grinders I have a Cabela's one.I use it to do raw for for my dogs, cats and chickens I grind 270 # a month, that feeds my 3 dogs 2 cats, and some treats for the 100s chickens. (the chickens get it twice a week) I grind turkey, chicken fish, beef venison, tong, hearth liver, green trip and veggies and fruits.
It was pricey but it already pay its keeping.

I looked at those. They do look great. I need to make sure I will use the grinder first before investing that much.

Oh my gosh I kinda feel like there must be some venison sacrilage going on here. Don't get me wrong we give some to the birds but what is wasted off of the three deer and a moose we got this season was such a small amount I can't imagine actually grinding it for the birds. It was less than a 1/4 grocery bag per animal and they got it the way it was. I could see the toung and livers (hearts actually pretty yummy) if you had a really small flock or a huge amount of organ meat I suppose.

We use all of our clean trim for our own sausages and pepperoni. No way the chickens are getting my venison! :/

Mmmmm jalapeño havarti pepperoni...

What I got was a friend who cleaned his own deer. It was mixed in with fat heart & liver and some hair. I am not good enough at knowing what's edible or not so grinding it for the hens is what I did. I was thankful for it.
