The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

@hellbender

I had read Harvey Ussery on the roadkill buckets but it seems he had to do a disclaimer as his birds got botulism one year. Likely from eating the drips of rotting corpse, unfortunately.

Have you ever had any issues w/yours?

Edited to add the link: http://www.themodernhomestead.us/article/Feeding-Chickens-Maggots.html

Never had a problem....you have to make the buckets correctly to avoid anything other than maggots from falling down. It's common sense.

Could you show how you do your buckets (maybe even some photos) so folks here can see how you do them?

Well showing the hens the babies that hatched in incubator end of November seems to have helped, now they are laying good again and not getting frozen eggs as bad, got a couple thinking of trying to brood, only problem seems to be our bipolar weather still. Funny thing is they want to use the hay bale caves down on the floor instead of a nesting box, at least they aren't all fighting over one box, we had 9 hens and put up a box for each and they all wanted to use one.

Any ideas on how to avoid frozen cracked eggs during the winter? We don't add light or heat for them but they are still laying Amerecuana took longest break 2 months the others took about 2 weeks was all

Yes they do look nice its unbeli able how many chicks these Cambodian chickens hatch in a year but hot weather all year round will help no winter
