The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Well, we used the permethrin. We dusted the chicks and mamas and sprayed in the building. We'll do another round in 10 days or so. Man I feel bad for those mamas. We have 9 chicks now and everyone is doing well.

Does anyone have a natural treatment for fungal growth in the lungs? The vet thinks that may be what my hen has, and gave me fluconazole to drop in her nostril each day. She said " we just hope she will inhale some of it", which makes me feel, not hopeful.

They are currently getting oregano powder in their water.

What was the actual diagnosis? Aspergillis? Or other type? Fungal infections of the lungs are often not treatable, so your vet is probably doing what they can but aren't expecting results. I know of nothing natural that would help except fresh clean air, and good ventilation and dry bedding.

Recently had a mouse (or rat) wipe out some flower and vegetable seedlings in my potting shed. Potting shed is in close proximity of our coop.
I've cleaned out the shed and placed a 'Victor Scent-Away Natural Rodent Repeller Pack' inside. Not sure it's helping with the mouse issue as I've removed the seedlings. However, the mint smell isn't so bad. My question... would it be safe to hang a repeller pack inside the hen house or coop? Obviously I'd hang it out of reach but will something in this pack hurt my hens?

Can you list the ingredients in the pack? I'm honestly thinking that the scent repellent won't work when you have a rat population. I don't think you will be able to make the scent strong enough.

I've started using enclosed traps with keys (kids can't get in) and they work really well in the chicken area as they can't get into where the trap is. I purchase them online for the "professional quality" and they really are better than what you can get at the store. I don't have rats, but do have plenty of chipmunks that I've trapped this way.

This is what I use:

This bate station WITHOUT THE POISON BAIT.

AND ONE OF THESE TRAPS INSIDE.

Ingredients read:
Peppermint oil: 3.70%
Corn Cob: 96.30%

Was thinking the mint smell might help inside the coop. We have dogs plus there are cats and hawks in the area. I haven't seen any rodents, only evidence. Rodents will go inside this plastic box with no bait added?

I put in some of the chicken feed (I make my own, but I think store-bought would work as well). You could put it in w/ a little peanut butter or just throw some on the trap trigger and in the little hallway.

I don't think the mint would be a problem unless it is a very strong smell in a very small place. How large is your chicken house?
