The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Okay... please excuse the "mom thing" but....

Not too long ago one of the cities in the area passed an ordinance allowing chickens. My youngest daughter, who works at,band writes a blog for, one of the local newspapers interviewed me for a "why do you have chickens" post. Wanted to share a link for anyone who might be interested.

If you get a chance to take a look, leave a comment! It's encouraging to know folks are reading as it is a new blog... The blog is very new and they've finally just set up a "subscribe by email" option.

Thanks to everyone who went over and read the other post!

I need to add that for a long time I read LW's name as LION WIZARD also. It was just recently that I noticed that I had it wrong. So, I guess I'm in good company, Del.

Ok I have another question regarding the electric fence.....

I am trying to visualize how I am going to set up the fence in my yard & was wondering......

does the fence have to touch another side of fence in order for it to work. (I keep thinking closed circuit) If thats confusing ....do you have to make a circle or square with the fence so that all ends of the fence are touching another end?
I know for my electric underground fence fo the dogs the meet in order for their to be an electric current at the same time.

Or could I take two pieces of fence just run them horizontal to close off a part of my yard?

Thanks
Jenn

No experience at all...so take it for what it's worth (?0)
I would think kerosene and a wound would burn like the devil! Maybe mite-killing & spur-removing on a more separate schedule? People who know, please enlighten us.

Are you talking about the electric net? If so, no, it doesn't have to close the circuit. You do use a ground rod which is provided with the fence that you pound into the ground close to the energizer. I usually use an existing building (like the hen house) as a starting point with an additional plastic fence post to anchor the fence to. On the other end - another post that I anchor to the run fence or another building depending where I run it.

Thank you Mumsy for the congrats!

Thanks Aoxa and Jeff for the egg info. I knew it wasn't fertile (simply impossible) but I have never seen/ noticed it before! Could be that I saw it because I was checking out the egg so closely. BYCers are just awesome!

Do any of you guys withdraw feed before processing your birds?

I do not. Just want to know your feelings on this.
yes I do..

1. it is easier on the bird since I hang them upside down.

2. It is less messy on me during disemboweling. I can see better and the intestines are empty enough I can tell if further study is necessary.

I have my fence (Premier) set up in a big connected square. But, I believe the fence will work open ended, or as you describe. It would depend on the length of the fence you want to charge, if you are talking a length or so, couple hundred feet, no problem. If you wanted to go with several lengths, you may have to add an extra ground rod or two at the far end. Also if you are going with two separate fences, you will need a extra charger.
