I was reading an article regarding raising roosters in Backyard Poultry and the gal that wrote it said something I've never seen anyone of you experienced folks mention. It made me want to ask you, Stony, Aoxo, Mumsy.... and any other OTs (or is that ot ??) for your "take" on it.

She was talking about training a rooster to respect you as "top rooster" or dominant so he will be submissive in your presence. Pretty much what we've already learned from y'all here. Then she said this as part of that process:

"Whenever your rooster is breeding a hen, stop it immediately! Make it clear to him he is not allowed to "breed" in your presence. This tells him you are the dominant rooster and only you are allowed to "breed" the hens when you are around. A dominant rooster shows the submissive rooster his place by attacking him if he breeds a hen in the dominant's presence." zip tie is what I called a wire tie bundles of 1000 at wal-mart electrical dept. they are plastic as delisha said and plastic is made with oil and oil occurs naturally

Plastic isn't the issue here...just wouldn't want it to get too tight on the leg or hurt her!

I wouldn't put anything on a chicks leg that will come off when other chicks peck at it and they will. I use Blue Kote. Dab a dot on a right leg front, left leg front, and reverse for different chicks. I also use food coloring for feather foot chicks. Can also put a drop of food coloring on the head, back, tummy. It lasts a week or two. When they are older, I use small zip ties. They come in many colors. Cheap in the dollar stores. I cut them off with manicure clippers or sissors when they start to get snug.

Okay, good...I'll try that. I just wanted to be sure they wouldn't be too tight. I have all sizes of zip ties around most of the time.

Just curious but where does one sign up to get the feed delivered or is it just a local thing? 

I would love to have it delivered to my door.

We can have it delivered but we choose not to. However in our area I believe we have to buy a minimum of a 1/2 ton or ton. Where I buy it they don't deliver but I am still paying right around $340.00 a ton or $.17 lb.

How do you ferment a ton of feed?

That's why I am not on the FF bandwagon.

I order my organic mash through our local co-op - It's not necessarily delivered to my door, just gets delivered to our town and I pick up my order once a month right down the street. This is what I use and I like to keep them on as natural and organic food as possible. This mash ferments really well too!
