The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Writing down every single item in the barn is mind numbing. Thankfully I took a lot of pictures.

I just counted the chicks in the basement. I have 12 plus the hen with the feet issues. She is doing better though. One foot does have frost bite on the tips of two toes. They don't seem to bother her any. It's the pads that were bothering her, and they are getting better every day. She's my little trooper. I'm not giving up on her.

Aoxo - have you considered a Monitor style barn?

I love the plans that Del showed with different pens opening in to runs w/separate doors out. That would be one of my ideals! And.... I think the barn in the photo looks like it may be too small? Have you thought about housing for sheep or any other animals you might want? Don't forget to cover them :)

That's why I mentioned bigger. I especially love the deck leading upstairs. Would be so great to have a little sitting area up there.

I do love the monitor style barns. Didn't even know what they were until I just googled them. Beautiful. Just my style.

And I love the outside stairs!

What is everyone's experience with Black Copper Marans? I want to know how they forage. How well they lay. What their personalities are like, etc. I am considering adding them when we rebuild. I have always wanted dark eggs.
I absolutely love that barn look! Is there a guest bedroom in there someplace? lol Share with us anything you want to share. Sometimes, talking about things, helps bring about healing.

I've had BCM for about a year now. I bought 5 eggs off ebay. 4 hatched. The chicks popped out of those shells after 19 days. They've been healthy, very calm temperament and friendly. They probably lay 5 days a week. I usually get 3 eggs a day out of 4 hens. They become broody easily. I think they are good foragers. I don't have a lot of experience as I only have an acre. They are the first out of the coop in the morning. I have a very beautiful roo, very attentive to his ladies. My vote is yes.

My Mother was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. She'll be 77 Friday, has a bad heart and her lungs are already compromised. Not sure how aggressive treatment can be.
