The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

@ aagg: Thank you for being candid. You have a splendid attitude.

Back in the old days (my old days) I used to think every single egg I ever put in the bator would hatch. After decades of setting, failing, succeeding, and failing again...I've learned just to take what I get and be grateful.

@ del: You are very kind but I'll tell you the truth. It is the combined sharing of information and knowledge on this thread that is amazing. I can't remember dates or names very well, but I remember tips that people share. Then I write them down.

Karen of Catdance was very honest about her own hatching experience at her farm. Her exact words to me when I told her I bought a Genesis 1588 specifically to hatch her eggs. She laughed, then she said, "I drowned a lot of my chicks in the Genesis 1588 when I first got it. I use a cabinet now. The trick with the Genesis is to keep the humidity at or under 40% the first eighteen and then slowly raise it to 50/55% at lock down. Then at pipping, slowly raise it to 60%" . She told me some of the pens were more difficult to get live chicks to hatch than others. That large vaulted skull has a lot to do with it. When I asked her about incubating upright in cartons or flat, she said, "Well...The hen sets on them flat. That seems a logical way to do it." (we were talking about the Genesis, not her cabinet or using automatic turners.)

One thing that is good with this Easter hatch..i will have these silkie eggs in lock down the day before we set for Easter..I have a whole week to get some Orpington Eggs..i hope she gets busy soon...nothing like waiting till the last minute.

A friend lives pretty far away and she asked me to pick up some adult foul for her. A trio of Basque from Green Fire. They are pretty birds and very sweet. I have them in the garage away from all of my birds. I was hoping they were laying so I could put some of those eggs in..but..no luck. They man had them in a heated shed..a bunch of birds..locked up..no runs open..I sort of yelled at him..he had no water for them either. These poor birds drank like a quart of water when I brought them home. He has like 30 birds housed with 20 Cornish X's. No ventilation. I tried suggesting things..i tried to buy all of his birds..I told him he was way over his head. Nice birds with a huge investment going down hill..it was a shame.

heartbreaking - good thing you're keeping his birds away from yours - who knows what they may be carrying....
