The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

This is my Silkie chick. OK, you Silkie experts, what color is it? When can I tell it's sex? "Thor" is approx. 36 hours old. The rest of the eggs have been in the incubator for 23 days. When do I pull the plug, so to speak.

I'll give you a laugh, Ever since I was a little girl, I looked forward to attending our county fair to go through the poultry barn. It used to be very small. It's still not very large. Have any of you been to the Steuben County Fair in Bath, NY?

Thanks! That's my daughter's duck, Gary the Guard Duck....My kids loved making a duck ramp into a barrel for the quackers to dive from! have lots of better pics of the crew from when they were out this past weekend...still trying to figure out a few breeds. I love looking at everyone else's chick pics, and don't want to flood the thread, so I may post one every now and again to see if you all can help! I have learned, and laughed and cried, sooooo much the last few weeks reading through all the posts. Thanks for being so awesome!

Looks like a Blue or Grey maybe. Sometimes you can tell by 12 weeks, but usually 4-6months. Leave the eggs in til end of day 25.

Okay everyone that has experience with naked neck turkens... I am in need of help!

I have been busy buying and taking care of some new babies and will catch up later.... just need to post these pics to see if something is wrong.

I picked up this little cutie today - eating, drinking, pooping fine. Very active. On ff organic chick starter, ACV and some poly-vi-sol in water. Chick doesn't act sick EXCEPT for constant, super loud peeping. I went to taker her out and wash some food off her feet and when she was wet, I noticed this big bulge, like an air bubble. Is this normal or is there something wrong? Once I swaddled her up in a warm washcloth and put her in my lap, she did stop crying and is currently sleeping on my lap.

Thanks for your help!
This first pic was taken earlier today when she was all fluffy and dry.

This pics looks bad but she was just cheeping.

Ruptured air sac. It will go away. I've had it before, but never on a NN and I bet the nude neck makes it look worse than it is.

If it was bigger and continued to get bigger you would need to poke a hole to let air out or it will tear. It's usually caused by some type of trauma (tramped or something).
The air normally is absorbed back into the tissue. That's always how I've seen it happen. I've had 3 chicks over the last year like this. All were fine after a while.

She needs to be dry and warm..have a blow dryer?

I have suggestions for people who have silkies, feather footed, and new chicks. Put a tablespoon of FF on top of dry feed. Mix it up. It is less messy, they stay dryer and warmer. They eat so very little, they need so very little FF to get nutritional benefits. I have started doing that since I read an article about FF and nutrition. This is myfirst time raising feather footed birds with FF. They were always wet. I did not like it. The large birds it is worth it in feed cost saving alone. In tiny chicks the savings is minimal since they eat so little.
