The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Waiting for these eggs to hatch is like watching grass grow.....I'm so wanting this batch to finish so I can go ahead and move the Fogle eggs into the Genesis.

The first Catdance chick is white. Beautiful and active. Named Clementine. Waiting on the Blue Splash zipping now. I need a Gigi.

It is hard for me to comment on all that I wish I could. Trust me when I say I read everything and audibly ooo.. and aww... on all the good news and nod my head to all the rest. This is my favorite thread and for sure the greatest peeps hang out here.

Hello. podie! Some of us use organic and some don't. We have an azure group in my area but I also have a local feed mill that mills fresh, organic feed to my specs so I'm REALLY BLESSED that way.

Hope you enjoy the thread!

Today was a rough day for me. I did my first culling. I did a lot of research, asked a lot of questions from several people. I went through the steps, one by one in my head, atleast 100 times. I made peace with my choice a couple of weeks ago. But there is just nothing that truly can prepare you for the process. You just have to do it. I have to admit that once the rooster was culled, the hens seemed to have a peaceful day. I'm still at peace with my decision. So thankful that it's behind me. And now we have a wonderful looking roasting chicken in my fridge.

Lash mom I had to laugh at your pics of your hens with dirty feet........you can still see the yellow in their legs....my hens yellow legs are black from digging so much in the garden these last few weeks lol

About the electro net........we only have a dusting of snow and I got my new electro netting. But there tends to be standing water where I want to start it since the hoop coop is not done yet. But I would love to get the girls out in the grass and out of the mud. I've read it has problems when the ground is dry but what about when its wet?

I was thinking I could put down a pallet, sort of like a bridge for the hens, to walk over where the standing water is now with regular plastic fencing I have on each side and then attach the electronet fence to the posts the plastic fencing is tied to.
What do yo.u think?

That decision is the hard part. The deed is the yucky part. The realization that you provide a service for the health of the flock and nutrition for your family is a sense of ..pride and relief.

I am butchering out a few NYD chicks this weekend
Young and tasty
I look forward to the food, not the deed

To hear your names brought tears to my eyes;. Today was emotional for Susan. She has a really hard time with Clem. They were really bonded. More so than Clem and I. Not that I didn't adore her, because I did - but Susan really really adored her.

Henry is such an easy going puppy. He only likes to poop on snow - we have lots of that.. but hopefully not for long - so he will have to adjust :p He is in his kennel for the night. Settled right down.. No matter how much I wanted to snuggle with him in bed - that would not be a good start.. He's going to be 120 pounds - definitely NOT a good idea lol.

I took a picture with Dylan's phone of Henry's daddy and Susan. My goodness Rico is huge! Very sweet. I just love them.

We had a busy day. Puppy at 9:00 am, went to pet store to get collar because the first didn't fit.. got mobbed by people there - I mean he is adorable I can't blame them for wanting to see him - had lunch with my parents here.. and Parker.. then went to their house for supper.. then went to visit with the contractor for the barn and his wife.. with Henry who had a play date with his wife's two puppies.. Just got home. So tired!

I brought the chickens meal worms and crickets, so they were not left out of today's fun. I sat with them for an hour before we went to get Henry.. and then again when we got home and before we went to supper. Henry met them too. Doesn't seem interested at all, but I won't trust him alone for a very long time.
