The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Delisha,

Thanks for your thorough and thought-provoking reply.

It looks like in Missouri, I'm exempt from inspection on eggs, as long as I sell them from my property...which is what everyone else seems to be doing.

To sell chicks and/or hatching eggs legally, I would need NPIP certification, which is what you were talking about, I assume.

finally caught up! Jeez, I have no idea what went wrong with the other threads I've been studying so faithfully for the past year, but thank you Bulldogma for starting this one. I hope I can keep up, y'all move so fast! How do you do it? I am unemployed and on here for a good part of my day and I still have trouble keeping up! Well, at least now I only have 2 threads to read instead of 3...this one and the Heritage one...
Hi everyone!

Mama put her 1 inch spurs to good use today. A young roo thought Mama looked awful cute and tried to have his way with her. Mama fights like a rooster and puts her spurs to good use. I don't think he will try that again any time soon

Yes, NPIP They are not really strict after your first pass. Just make sure you keep your paperwork up to date and your chicken numbers have to match your paperwork.

BDM.

Most common sign of Cocci is looking chilled and puffed up. Thought I'd throw that out there.

as well as the splay leg. That usually occurs before they even take a bite. Due to a slipped tendon while they struggle to walk in the incubator. I've seen it a lot before I put the shelf liner in the bottom of my bator.

Thank you! I modified the post to reflect this information.

Funny thing I used for baby roosts... I work for a company that has, as one of it's businesses, a store-front paint store. I brought home some of the LARGE paint stirers - not the 1 gal size but the ones that are about 24" long. Used 2 small boxes that stood about 4-5" high and taped 2 paint stir sticks side by side on the boxes to make a roost that was double-wide of the paint sticks. They loved that thing!

Here is a (poor) photo of the first one where I only had the stick single wide. When they were a little bigger I added the second stick. They'd all get on it faithfully every night!

What a great idea!

LOL! Go, Mama!!

Howdy All!
I only posted once on Bee's thread, as I was always trying to catch up and keep up the reading. And with this new thread, I find myself still doing the same.

Same here. I got to the end of the road less traveled and it was shut down 2 days later. I took before pics and wanted to post after pics when ready..as it takes a while to correct mistakes the natural way. Slower results but far lasting since the source/cause of the problem is corrected instead of quick fix.

I started the FF almost 2 weeks ago, and my egg count has been dropping. I'm not sure if it is due to the shorter days, or if they girls are protesting the changes. I used to keep pellets in their coops all the time, and now feed them 2 times a day. They are piggies, and I haven't seen any drop in their intake of the FF, as of yet. What do you think it is? My DH is certian it's the new FF.  I think Solstace. Again...having same experience! What pigs...especially my 2 BO hens. The largest has ff coated on her comb and waddles and the other BO circles the ff like a shark. Trusting the wisdom I have read on the other threads that consumption will drop.

Thank you BDM for keeping this thread alive, and hoping to see the OT on here too. It's a major crying shame that both threads are locked!

A HUGE LOSS not have these threads. The years of knowledge from the OTs and BK is a big loss for a newbie like me. I am so puzzled as to why anyone feeling "offended " didn't just move on elsewhere. Loads of threads on here to suit different ideas about chicken keeping. And plenty on these 2 particular threads to implement what works for you personally according to flock size, space and climate. Nobody was forcing you to do these things! Or believe their own beliefs or even purchase a sweet cute pink incubator. ;)
I really still don't understand what happened.

So thanks for starting this thread. I really did LOL early on when a certain someone came back several times to proclaim she would not follow the thread.....and kept posting about it. Us wee humans make me laugh, even at myself.

I sure miss hearing from Mumsey Johnny tales. And other good stories from all around the world (even Thailand) regarding best practices and able to get great tried/true advice how to keep improving. Aoxa hope you wont be shy about posting some beautiful pics here. My little Florida girl would love love to see your chickens around any snow.
thanks all.

And stony if aoxa puts some great pics out we will try to oohhh and ahhh without quoting all of them and dragging the thread out!!!
kinda sorta promise!!

As you can see I am still learning how to post and quote
