The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

What's BOSS?

How much FF do you think 8 hens would go through in a day? Do you just put it out for them and they will regulate themselves, or should I be putting out a set amount?

They love it BTW!

I was told by someone that for my 9 adult/teen birds to give them a 2lb coffee can full daily and adjust from there. They should not have any left over at the end of the day. If there are leftovers, cut back. I am gonna increase my amount until this happens. Mine do "free range" in a large covered run and range out of that if I can be out with them to watch for the hawks.

THis is BOSS...

But, it also can stand for BlackOilSunflowerSeeds.....
HA!!! That's funny. I have never heard of BOSS before, hmmmm. I wonder where I might find it here!

Is this baby chick getting around/up walking, using the bad leg and it's foot correctly yet texasmomma? If there is no improvement within a couple of days with the brace/hobble on, I have a different idea on what the leg issue could be...
Would love to hear what you think might be going on. It is not really walking or putting pressure on the foot. The leg is straightened out now, but it doesn't grasp with the foot.

jenn,

Most feed stores, Tractor Supplys, heck even home depot and Lowes sell it around me. You can find it anywhere they sell wild bird food.

Good luck finding it, shouldn't be too hard.

I love that picture of your daughter with her first egg..

Quote: we catch it on sale - in feed stores, fred meyers - sold as wild bird seed as well as bulk in feed stores. We buy up when it's around 50 cents/pound - or $20 for 40 pound bags. Getting harder to find that price tho. We've been feeding the chickadees & other wild birds BOSS for many years. they really do love it! - I think folks ferment it along with the other...

Good thing I read so quick....you people just don't slow down!
I like all the DL talk, since we're switching from the cabinet coop to just roosts in the stall. I'm still not sure what I'll do with all of it, since I don't really garden. Maybe continue to layer it in the run? We're trying to fix the horrible soil in there, making it more friendly to bugs and worms. Tips? I love this thread, but sometimes with so many people, we have a hard time having a thorough conversation on one solid topic. I have noticed the last few days people talk through one subject for a while, like the brining and DE topics, those were nice.
I wanted to say, even though I don't always comment, I really enjoy everyones opinions and sense humor.

I think you should continue to toss it in the run on one side..
