The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Aoxa...you beat me! (I was going to put the link to that article but didn't.... )
AG lime will not burn feet, it's the other lime that will :)

Here is a link all about different limes.

Quote:
One of the topics most frequently asked about by gardeners is liming the soil: why, how, and
when? Most limestone products are a combination of screen sizes, with the finest particles
reacting in 2-6 months, intermediate sizes reacting in 6-12 months, and large particles breaking
down in 1-6 years. This means limestone application in the quantity recommended by a soil
analysis report will maintain an adequate pH for up to 6 years, possibly more. How rapidly the
soil pH falls in an urban environment depends largely on the amount of nitrogen fertilizer
applied annually; the less applied, the slower the pH falls. Therefore, not only is an annual
application of lime unnecessary, but it can actually push the soil pH too high and make other soil
nutrients unavailable to the plants.

Limestone can be put out at any time of year, although fall application gives it several months to
break down before the spring growing season. Agricultural lime (calcitic or dolomitic lime) is
safe to use and is nontoxic to plants, people and pets. Burned lime (quicklime or unslaked lime)
and hydrated lime (slaked or builder's lime), however, are quite caustic and may burn plants, so
they are generally not recommended.

Why thank you!

let all my birds out this morning and in one of the pens, the mutt breeding pen I found the rooster dead, still warmish. A Sumatra/black Australop mix. Handsome boy, his pics are up here somewhere. He was perfectly healthy yesterday. Heart attack I guess? I have one really really randy young guy who free ranges, but terrorizes the girls. I think maybe he just found a new home. Looks like some rooster and or hen/rooster swapping soon.
I guess I need to warm up some water.

Do you think you'll be able to tell what the issue is when you process? And just a general question...would you be able to detect heart failure via autopsy? If so, what would you look for?

PS: Sorry to hear that. I'm not looking forward to having that kind of experience.

if there is I wouldn't know what to look for in the case of a heart attack. I'm actually not bothered in the least. Well ok, a little, I only have one more of that mix in a rooster. Sure changed my plans though. And here I was going to start building myself a couple of bows. Ohh well. Good thing I was in the shop at 5:30 and got a little play time in this morning.

If it were a hen I would be a bit upset. Hate seeing the girls die

When they die like that do you still eat them?

Or cook them up for animals at least? By animals I mean the chickens. My chickens love chicken.

I have never before eaten a bird that just dropped dead. I'm going to run it by my wife 1st. I know he was perfectly healthy yesterday. Still a little torn an what do do. Butcher or just incinerate him. I don't know. I'll think on it and see if anyone here has any feedback.
