The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Temp says 100. The thermometer is almost under the lamp directly. A few almost look like they're standing there falling asleep. It's like a few of them will stand and sway then 'catch' themselves.

Thank you everyone so much for helping me with this!!

You know, they do sleep.... a lot.... Huddled is ok. If the temp is 90 on the floor where they are, they are fine. Huddled is not bad. Piled is when they are cold. There is a difference.

To the person in Arizona with no feed. You would be amazed at what they can find in bare dirt.

Are they supposed to 'sit'? On the floor?
400

On the far right of the pic. And I realize how silly it sounds.

I have had that in fat chicks..that over ate. I attributed it to sluffing..since it was only one or two chicks..if it is cocci..it will stink to high heaven and more than one will be showing blood in stools. Try giving them just dry for a feeding and see if it stops. I bet it is piggy syndrome..add a few leaves of chopped up Oregano.
. That sounds like thee same kind of poop my 5 week old chicks had. I was afraid it was Cocci so I treated. Now I wonder if they were just a little fluffed up cause they ate like little piggies when they arrived from the post office. I didn't take mine off ff, but they were only on Corid for 2 days and I haven't seen bloody poo since. Just normal looking sloughings. Is the oregano suppose to be dried? The only herbs and spices I have right now are in a spice rack. How about garlic. Does that need to be boiled or just throw a clove or 6 in a blender?

You'd be surprised at the positions they get themselves in....

I have to say, if I saw this I would wonder if it had passed! Thank you so much everyone for helping the newbie. On a side note. They have taken to FF really well! I'm very happy I decided to go FF route!!

Question: I keep checking for fertility in my 2 Wyandotte girls 10 months old around Valentines Day (the 2 W roo's are the same age) & they don't look fertile yet to me. How long does it take Wyandotte's to get going? They are being bred all the time but I don't think the times I've watched that those 2 boys have figured out the "right area" ,lol. Also how long after pullets start laying do their eggs finally get the size they'll end up being & I think I read where you shouldn't use pullet eggs for hatching? I'm dying to try to hatch some Dottes but don't want to waste my time & my AG broody's time either :)

Breeding and Infertility

Chickens are pretty smart..if they are not ready, or simply do not like the male who is breeding them..they will *spit* out the semen. Some will simply wait till the weather improves and they know the off spring will survive.

What do you mean they spit it? I didn't even know they did it that..... never mind.... family forum!

I'm glad they are liking the FF! Mine love it! I've never had chicks who enjoyed my hand entering the brooder until I started FF. My hand meant more FF was coming.
