The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Geez, Loin! You have a very kind heart to be so forgiving to that dog! I hope you can find it a good home... made of something indestructible... with people who don't mind a few chewed up shoes... or chairs... or ceilings...

I had 2 Silkie x Cochin chicks hatch over night and they are already Jedis!

And look! See how they stay together as they traverse the dangerous planet eggshell.

(OK - that's actually a reflection of my small, red LED flashlight that I use for candling and checking in on my 'bator at night. Just a case of perfect placement and I didn't know it until I downloaded the pictures.)

When we got up this morning, one of the Dark Cornish pipped, so I called my 9-year-old over to see. As she stood there, the thing went from pip to zip to springing out of its shell in a period of about 3 minutes!

To keep my breeds separate so I can tell who is who, I put the DC in a pink and white dishwasher caddy and my Swedish Flower Hen egg is in a blue caddy. They snap shut to prevent escape.

Not a very good shot, but all the chick pics were taken at very close quarters in the closet under the stairs through the little windows on the 'bator.

Oh - and after last month's botched attempt at hatching, I should mention that tomorrow noon will be day 21 for these eggs. Those Silkie x Cochins were super early, and the DC was almost a day and a half early. All are fully developed with no extra yolk to speak of.

Still waiting on one SFH egg, 2 DC and 2 "Silcochin" eggs.

I'm most anxious about the SFH egg.
Your news has put a huge smile on my face this morning. I'm so happy for your hatch success!

You are a very nice person to still consider his survival

No.... not nice.... He has issues. I wouldn't kill a child, how can I a dog? If he was aggressive toward the kids.... dead dog.

He was fine with me all day Friday. He has been abandoned for a long time I suspect, and has survived. He has abandonment issues. I found a rescue that is coming tomorrow to pick him up. I am hopeful that a good family will love him and accept the love he has to offer. Love that he gave once, but apparently wasn't enough for his previous owners. THEY are the ones I would like to shoot.

I had read earlier somewhere that chickens had a poor sense of smell. But Mumsy I agree with you--I can have scrambled eggs wrapped in wax paper in my jacket pocket, and all of the chickens can smell it before I get it out. I give some each day to my broody hen for extra protein.
I like to read encylopedia articles about chickens. Their history and all that. There is a lot of interesting stuff on birds ability to smell. Most studies involved chickens at some point. I can't find the scientific PDF down load that goes into great detail but I like this article in this link. Really interesting read.

I'm sorry but this made me laugh. So sorry it happened to you but had it happen to me. I drove from half way across NY state over and up half way of Michigan to get a dog. He proceeded to destroy our home over a year. We just replaced the carpet in our bedroom last night, going to have to wash and re varnish our dressers. All the moulding is gone from around doors. He peed everywhere. Was able to chew his way out of a wire dog crate. All screens gone. I could go on and on. I had 2 appointments with the vet to have him euthanized but cancelled both. About a month ago he was hit by a car. Divine intervention. We are all crazy dog lovers! lol

I have 32 boxes of laminate flooring in the dining room. Taking out the carpet and putting it down due to the 4 inside dogs.
