The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Silkie eggs are easy to see veining early. If you are confident with your flash light..assume they are duds.
Try a test

get a glass of 100 degree water..take out one egg you know is a dud and slowly lower into the water..tell me what it does.

Sorry, it took me so long. Got a bowl full of 100 degree water. Slid the egg in and it didn't drop fast to the bottom but to the bottom it went with the larger end up. I can see the air sac but the rest of the egg doesn't look normal. Before I decide what to do, I'll try to photograph it if I can. Also I did get pics not sure if you can see what I mean.

Hey I have a quick question. I am considering adding to my flock this spring but the only place I have room is in a 1/2 acre yard and coop with 3 roosters. My 3 roosters are almost 2 years old and get along really well. If I added about 12-15 pullets to the yard do you think the roosters would hurt them? I would not put the girls out there till they were about 8 weeks old. Just wanted to get some thoughts....its not something I have to do its just all my other girls are now 3-4 years old and are slowing down in the egg department.
12 weeks should be OK. Your boys will be delighted.,...8 week old with some bachelors and it will not be pretty. More like scary.

If the egg sunk..it is a dud
The inside was not looking normal. It almost looked liquidy or something. Does that mean it started? or just rotted? I had 3 pic's to show you but they didn't want to download. I really hate windows 8. Can I toss the Silkie eggs that haven't started veining or doing anything? It's been 13 days. I just candled 2 NV eggs from5-7 days ago and they have not changed. You can just make out the dark on the right of the egg. If I were to flip it over it would be all light. Shouldn't the chick take up more of the egg and air sac showing by now?. Will I be able to tell if these were fertile if I break them open now? I'm going to look up failed egg photo's. Also, the same with my white leghorn eggs. They've been in over a week. I should see significant growing by now, am I right? They are doing much better than the Silkies have. Thanks so much. LAST NIGHT THE COYOTES WERE REALLY RUNNING AND HOWLING. I SPENT EXTRA TIME MAKING SURE EVERYTHING WAS SECURE. THEY MAKE MY HAIR STAND ON END. AND THEY WERE VERY CLOSE. An update on introducing my new roo. After dark, I got him out of his cage and placed in on a roost. This morning I beat feet outto open the door just before daybreak and all is well so far. They are not mingling but not fighting either. All will be ok in my kingdom today. whew! Sorry about the pic quality. It's one of the grandkids cameras. I should get mine back this week.

Quote: One week is not enough time..10 days is. If they do not stink leave them if you are not sure. That egg looks fertile from what I am seeing in the quality of the picture. Is this the squished or the changed egg shape?

I have a rule about eggs in the bator. If it is weird, cracked..I toss it..it is not worth the rest of the eggs to become contaminated for one viable egg. It is difficult to remove infections/contamination's out of the incubator. Many other eggs become infected or give live viable eggs development issues after hatch.

coyotes make me nervous too..take your dog for a walk in the area you think you heard them..bring a bottle of pee.

Glad your roo seems to be doing better today...

Not much to see in the first few days..In silkie eggs I can see them if I am in a pitch black room.

Nice detail seen here..but hard to see in the egg shell.

Loved those pic's. The Silkie eggs are due to hatch in 8 days. This egg above shows no growth at all. No reason I can't hang onto them until the other's hatch. I've only candled eggs about 4 times in my life but I've noticed that the one's that aren't viable get cold quickly. I'll borrow my DIL camera and try a different one tonight. I took that one in the laundry room this morning and it wasn't pitch black.

I"m back a day early! The romantic weekend cut short because we both agreed it was more important to get our new Silkies and eggs home and safe. I get a rain check for another.

My head wants to explode from all I saw, heard, experienced, and brought home. I don't even know how to explain it all yet. I took lots of pictures but I was so over whelmed by Karen's generosity and knowledge, not to mention her amazing collection of the most beautiful Silkies I've ever seen! I couldn't focus on focusing my camera or getting the flash to work inside the barns.

I'm in love with the cockerel and pullet she paired for me and she gave me a hen that has a crumpled foot as company for the pullet. The little gimpy hen is simply GORGEOUS and the sweetest little bird if she produces chicks for me, I will be over the moon.
Two dozen mixed eggs are now in the Genesis 1588 incubator. Karen gave me a great tutorial on how to use it with her eggs.
I'll share more of my incredible experience at Catdance Farm tomorrow after I've rested from a twelve hour round trip car ride plus two ferry trips. I'm exhausted.

I will leave you all with this tantalizing tidbit. I was given a tour of FOUR barns filled with the most consistently typey and beautiful Silkies I could ever dream of seeing! I was near hyperventilating at each pen. They just got better and better to the very last pen. Amazing! A few pictures. More tomorrow.

Karen and her magnificent German Shepherd Mickey, taking us on the tour of the breeding pens where my eggs came from.

One of dozens of pens. I forget what these are. I heard the term 'splits' a lot.

Frustrated my camera pooped out for this picture. Karen took this Buff cock out of the pen to show me. He was the deepest red buff colored Silkie I've ever seen. Stunning! My picture cannot show his color but he was nearly red and came from Buffs. I think he was in a Porcelain project pen.

I think this is another Porcelain pen. Gorgeous birds.

Ok. Time for a glass of wine in front of the fireplace with my sweetheart. He is a very dear husband for making this long trip in one day. We did have a lot of fun even though is was cut short.
Tomorrow I'll play with my new trio and take better pictures. I love love love them so.

So looking forward to those pictures, and hearing more Mumsy! everyone! MB

I'm getting Pm that are not addressed to me. Anyone else?

Not so far but there's plenty of the day left for things to go wrong :)

I am envious of your trip to Catdance's place. I have 5 chicks in a brooder that hatched from 24 shipped to me. They are lovely. Wish more had hatched, but I'm grateful for having the 5. I got a lavender, a porcelain, a blue/splash, and 2 whites, one of which has yellow down and the other silver, so I want to PM her and ask if that is notable.

My PM box was filled with four messages not intended for me. It was quite disconcerting to say the least. I'm glad they were nothing personal but now I'm leary of using this feature on BYC.

If you got five of that mix, your are a lucky duck! I saw each of those breeding pens that the eggs she sells come out of. You would keel over if you saw those roos and hens! Some pens had six hens to a roo and some had twelve hens. That barn was my favorite. Those birds were so lovely.
Yes, you can ask Karen anything about your eggs or chicks. She is a very nice lady. Personally speaking from my experience with White Silkies...Both yellow and silver down will give you white birds. The silver chick should turn out to be a brilliant white Silkie. DESIRABLE. Let us know what she says.
