The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

It's been 24 hours since I brought my Grey Silkie pullet 'Binkus' into the house. She has exhibited brain injury symptoms. ...

She cleaned out within an hour after the Cod liver oil. Drank the Selenium water on her own power once I dipped her beak. She ate the scrambled egg with great difficulty of head spasms and it was very sad to me to watch her struggle.

She showed improvement this morning. I think shes going to be fine in a few more days. She is going in the Silkie pullet pen for protection until shes matured and fully healed.
Mumsy that is fabulous news.

Aoxa..

No it is one of the RIR..from the NYD hatch

I am no help for hatchery's..sorry
They have a sticky on here where readers have rated hatchery's and shared experiences. That might be a great place to check

I was looking at the Marens but I think there are places I could get them that some here have recommended.

I'm almost positive that the daily journal in Franklin IN ran an ad about backyard chickens and stated that we had a breeder of the Marens in Indianapolis. I think I saw a ad on Craigs list for him too last fall.
I know it is not much to go on, gut it would be somewhat local if you found him, and if I recal right he was a touch cheaper than the Ohio link posted.

I assumed it was the silkie because they are so prone to head injuries. Especially ones with vaulted skulls.

My hen with the frost bite (Margaret) is going to loose her toes any time now. They look mummified. She sure is happy though. I had her in a little cardboard box with bedding and set her beside me (she feels like humans are her flock right now) and she proceeded to jump out of the box trying to get to me. Silly thing. She loves attention. I have never seen a chicken crave attention so much. Makes me sad that she doesn't have any friends right now, but that will all change this Friday.. at least if she lets the chicks be her flock. She has a hard time getting around right now. She does get to food and water and to her favourite corner of the kennel, but if taken out of the kennel and set on the floor - she does not like this. She backs up. When Susan told me this after checking on her Friday my heart stopped. All I could think was Mareks.

Until I saw the behaviour with my own eyes and could tell it's all related to the awkwardness of her feet. She can go forward, but she has to focus. She will lose at least 4 toes total. 3 on one foot, 1 on the other.

Should I take pictures of it?

I didn't realize your silkie was injured until now. However, she looks like the Easter Bunny so I thought I would mention that. So cute.
Wait, which one of yours is acting odd? Your silkie?
I definitely will!
Silkies are always odd from day one ;)
HAH!!!

It's true. They are odd little clucks. But I love them so.

I don't like posting about emergency stuff. I kind of keep it close to my heart until I know which way it may go.
I was really afraid I was going to have to put this girl down today. So far, treatment is working.

So much good stuff on this thread today. Aoxa is featured in a book! Del is getting dream birds! We have new people posting! Garlic and pumpkin goodness abounds! And my little Grey Silkie is on the mend.

*insert happy joy joy dance*

I'm the same way Mumsy! I didn't want to say anything about Margaret until I assessed her. :)
