The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

PEAT MOSS --

a few things I've learned about peat moss as a horticultural 'ingredient' -- take what you will from the following:

1) yes it is non-renewable & there are concerns in the environmental community about harvesting & etc -- point made - there is nothing quite like it, and it is organic - as in - it is derived from carbon-based life forms, not inorganic chemicals. I think the industry is moving towards coconut coir - in bagged soil. I think you can buy that as an ingredient - I haven't used, other than in already mixed soils. Don't know coconut coir hazards, benefits, or anything else...

2) As peat moss that is sold in dry, compressed bales - the dry particles may become airborne & can be inhaled. Reread this -- the DRY particles may become airborne. Mumsy says she uses a mask - I think this would be a good precaution especially when stirring up the dry, right out of the plastic-bale, bag stuff. For this reason, I personally, would be cautious about adding completely dry stuff to a dust bin for the chickens - would wonder about airborne particles being inhaled??? But I have no personal experience with that -- just adding it as a thought. (I use fireplace ashes over sand for my chicks...???)

3) when peat moss is dry it is hydro - PHOBIC (water-shedding). When it is slightly moistened, it becomes hydro PHYLLIC (water-absorbing). When mixing peat moss into a soil recipe, we will often add a very small amount of dish soap to the water, to enable the peat moss to initially begin to accept water. The soap serves to break the phobic 'shell' if you will. You can see this on a newly opened bag - very dry peat moss - sprinkle drops of water onto it & you will see it roll off without being absorbed. Once exposed to humidity however, it will readily accept water & expand. This is not widely known amongst us casual users of peat moss - who think only of peat moss in its later state, and do not understand this first hydro-phobic state as it is sold & marketed (lighter & easier to ship). Leaving a bag open to ambient moisture, outside, will help. I think you can find bagged pre-moistened peat moss, but it would be more expensive than the equivalent dry.

4) in horticulture classes, we were told there is some odd something in peat moss that may cause a rash. Don't recall the details - but they said if we ever came up with an unexplained rash on our arms, to let the doctor know we worked with peat, to diagnose. Don't know if this was urban legend, or how often, or anything -- just mentioning here, in case you run into something like this. I've used peatmoss in soil 'recipes' for decades & not had anything like this happen, but it's lodged in the back of my brain, so am sharing.

as said - take what you will - this is just what i know from making 'dirt' - barb

So I spent some extra $ and got a #50 lb. bag of Game bird. 26% protein. I haven't read through the whole label yet. So much going on with two incubators percolating, an injured silkie in intensive care, chicks, new birds, blah blah blah. When I was raising mainly bantams, all I ever used was Game bird. Everybody in the barn and breeding pens are getting it now.
Thank you Mumsy.

I have heard of others giving the game bird as well. After reading the labels on the layer feed I currently give and other brands, I realize that there are more words there that I dont know what they are and I dont think I like that the first 2 ingredients are corn & soybeans and that they all seem to be promoting a vegetarian diet and animal protein free food. The protein levels in the brands I looked at range from 15-18%.

I know everyone has their own opinion on the amount of protein they like to give their poultry but I just wanted to make sure I didn't give them to much. Especially since they get meat/chicken weekly in the form of scraps and the grease/lard from cooking. Even though my girls are on layer feed I also have oyster shells out for free choice. They dont eat much of it though.

I also found a product Manna pro sells that is called Poultry Conditioner. It has Calf Manna, flaxseed meal, fish meal, yucca, kelp, anise flavor and a bunch of other things in it. Its described as for those who show poultry. I have read that several people have added Calf Manna to their feed and had good results with it with the health of their chickens.
Their game food crumbles are 24% protein.

I just want to get them on something healthy for them. 2 still have minor leaky butts that i keep clean but are acting normal anyways. I havent seen the prolapsed vent return in either of them. Everyone is still laying. I just have a hunch its something their lacking in their feed? Never had a problem till about 2 weeks ago. fresh greens every day, table scraps, FF........these girls are not starving or lacking food.

And the research I did on prolapse vent says it can be caused by calcium deficency........but if they are on layer feed with oyster shell free choice why would they be deficient in calcium? They also get egg shells, egg, yogurt....lots of calcium there as well.

I did start giving them parsley & cilantro daily for a little experiment to see if it would increase laying as I read. Since starting that at the beginning of the month I now get 2 more eggs a week. So did it increase their egg production or was it because at 630 am its dawn and they are up earlier ready to be let out? Who know but at least they enjoyed the extra greens :)

Went out to the garage to read the Game bird label and it was off. After some searching, found it and surprise surprise to me. It isn't the same as what I used to feed in 1997.

I need to go to the feed store now and pick up another bag of the All purpose for the general layers. They don't need the 30 % protein! With all the other things that go into their FF this extra is just going out in the poo.
What I bought is Purina Startena Game Bird Chow. Un-medicated. First ingredient Soy meal, then Wheat, Canola meal, and Porcine meat meal. (no ruminant or bone meal added)

No wonder it smells funny in the ferment bucket.

I'll use this for chick starter in a smaller batch. The label says it's a good Turkey and duck feed.

No corn at least.

Well...I'm going to have an abundance of feed for a few months. Until the turkey poults come in May.

I'm all about putting nice smelling spices and herbs in my DL. Need to back track to see what people use. Is there anything I want to avoid? sue

Yeah perfect for your turkeys.. Turkeys eat A LOT. Crazy piggies they are!

I'm enjoying reading about everyone's feed. And thanks CM for the peat moss primer!

I have an old fashioned feed mill in my area so I can spec what I want in the feed - and don't want - and they will formulate it to the protein and calcium level that I want. So what I feed probably won't help anyone that doesn't have that kind of place around.

(But I sure love having that place!

I have them do a middle-of-the-road on protein (16%) and low enough calcium that everyone can eat it then have calcium carbonate free choice with extra meat protein for the babies for sure and the oldsters too.

It does have fish meal in it and I've asked the formulator to look into meat meal of some kind for the next go around. He's not sure he can find that however.

I feel so blessed to have that resource for sure.

Is the site doing strange things for anyone else today? I just got a message that "since I'm new here my post has to be moderated".... Other strange things too earlier. I think there are a few bugs today??

I had written a whole post and it's totally gone.
