The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

They started debris clean up today. STARTED. not finished.

So I had to come home to see all that in a big pile. They didn't dig the hole like they said they would for the animals, and now debris is all over their resting place. We told them they have to go through it again. This is not what we agreed on.

I'm so tired of crying.

:( I am so sorry.

It was such a beautiful day today. The chicks are doing great and the hubby plowed my garden. Lots of work to do outside but taking it a day at a time. This will be my first real vegetable garden. Also planted herbs and flowers. The little homestead is coming together

Thank you delisha and Leahs Mom. Can't really get to the grass right now thats why I was wondering about deep litter out of the coop. I am fermenting starter for the new ones now. I must admit I am kinda of leary of thought of the peeps getting cocci and I would be the one that gave it to them.

I hope things don't come flying my way as I know you are all Silkie people but hatching Silkies has to be one of the most frustrating things I've ever done. They are so slow. The 1 that finally hatched came out and poked a hole in a 2nd egg, so I've named him Thor (hopefully the feminine tense.) The holee is dead. I don't like to intervene but I think in this case it would have been ok. He was alive before my nap and several hours later he wasn't. I called my 5 yr old grandson to discuss names and he advised me that he was watching a movie so I'd have to call another time. So, Thor it is.
Hatching Marans, without exception, involves a peck hole and within an hour the chick is out strutting, "I'm the man, yeah, I'm the man!"
I have 5 more Silkie eggs and tomorrow is day 23.

I got a new fermenting container! Now that I have 4 new kiddos - which are getting quite large - and nowhere to forage yet, we were outgrowing our little glass truffle container.

Got a 2 gal GLASS (!) crock. Still keeping it on the counter top for easy access. That's a jar of oregano next to it.

Here's the old truffle bowl. I think it held about 3 quarts.

I was also looking for a small bucket to carry feed outside in. Figured that since it's Easter time I'd find something. These are are a little larger than I wanted so I may find something else but these were .97 at Walmart - and MADE IN USA from #2 HDPE food grade (everywhere else had stuff from China).

Okay - Time for the "Question of the Moment"

A:
List ONE thing that you have tried because of reading this thread (or one of the other 2: OT & ROAD) that you learned about or were encouraged to try that you're glad you did.

B:
What has been the result since you tried it? Are you glad you did it? Have the results been positive or negative?

Sally8 - sorry you lost one of the Silkie chicks. The one in the picture sure is cute, though!

Fermented feed!

Positive, for sure! I'm very glad I started fermenting - my feed bills are down, waste is down and my birds have been super healthy on it!
