The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I got a new fermenting container! Now that I have 4 new kiddos - which are getting quite large - and nowhere to forage yet, we were outgrowing our little glass truffle container.

Got a 2 gal GLASS (!) crock. Still keeping it on the counter top for easy access. That's a jar of oregano next to it.

Here's the old truffle bowl. I think it held about 3 quarts.

I was also looking for a small bucket to carry feed outside in. Figured that since it's Easter time I'd find something. These are are a little larger than I wanted so I may find something else but these were .97 at Walmart - and MADE IN USA from #2 HDPE food grade (everywhere else had stuff from China).
All very nice containers..even the the USA plastic ones.

Okay - Time for the "Question of the Moment"

A:
List ONE thing that you have tried because of reading this thread (or one of the other 2: OT & ROAD) that you learned about or were encouraged to try that you're glad you did.

Nu-stock is a cure all for most things. Cuts, gleet, infections etc...
B:
What has been the result since you tried it? Are you glad you did it? Have the results been positive or negative?

I have used Nu-stock on an infection on my 24 year old cat and she is almost healed and doing great. Also smeared it on a new pullet that my sister bought, she had a lot of bald areas, was picked on, and she is starting to re-grow her feathers after applying once 3 days ago.

A. I have 2....fermented feed & deep litter
B. both are easy to do, cut down on costs & are healthier for my flock of 4 :)

Road/ It would have to be deep litter. Honestly the jury is still out if I am keeping it. I am glad I did try it for the benefits for my birds. I like the time saving feature.

It has saved so much of my time with cleaning. I am looking forward to the added benefits to my garden and to the runs this spring. I do not like the *messy* look of it. I do not like it in deep cold. It holds more moisture. I have had frost bite for the first time.

@lalaland: Thank you. I plant garlic now and will harvest bulbs in July. I plant in June to harvest bulbs in later Fall. Some bulbs I missed harvesting last year are starting to come up now. I plant in raised beds. The soil warms faster and there is perfect drainage.

@Justine: I'm so sorry you are going through this added grief coupled with frustration. My heart is heavy having learned it.

@Sally8: Don't feel bad about losing Silkies at hatch. It happens to everyone. Even top notch breeders. They are a challenging variety of chicken to hatch live ones regularly.

@Leahs Mom: I had to read your post twice to make sure those were YOUR plastic buckets!

I did indeed make a hoop coop. Just plastic and a large flight run right now. Waiting for turkeys.
