The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I posted this on the silkie thread, but wanted to see what you guys thought too since a lot of you have experience with silkies. "Cloud" is my only silkie hen in my current flock so I am just hoping there's nothing wrong with her...

I have a question about my little white silkie's behavior - I think she's trying to go broody. She is about 24 weeks old and started laying for me at around 20 weeks. She's a pretty good little layer and only has given me one softshell so far.
Anyway, when I went to put them up for the night last night, she was in her favorite nesting box instead of the roost like usual. She normally roosts with all the big girls. I thought that was really strange, but I just left her there and when I went out in the morning, she was still there. I found a couple eggs under her as she's laying in the favorite nesting area of all the girls, and took them away. She didn't make any noise at me, but she did fluff her feathers.
This went on all day - somehow, the other girls would get in there and lay but I would have to collect them from underneath her. Every time I grabbed another egg or two, she would fluff up at me, but I would take her out of the box/coop and put her on the ground in the run. She would then get a drink, scratch around for a minute or two, eat minimally, but eventually go right back into the coop. I think I removed her from the box and collected eggs (one was hers) 4-5 different times today. Then again tonight, when I went to make sure they were all in bed, she was back in the nesting box instead of the roost... any thoughts? Any advice?

The above was posted yesterday - when I went out again this morning she was in the nest again - no eggs under her, but she might be getting to ready to lay for the day... I took her out anyway and put her on the ground. She joined the flock scratching through some of the table scraps I threw out this morning, got a drink, and then was back in the coop within a few minutes. She's such a tiny little thing - I just worry that she's not really eating much. The only other thing I noticed is that she seems to be a little more "crabby" with the other girls. She's half their size but is pecking at them to stay away from her.
This sounds exactly like my bantam hen, she is sitting on 4 eggs that I moved from another nest being brooder by another hen. She still continued to lay until I slipped 4 golf balls under her and she decided that was enough eggs to sit on. Now she squawks at me if I even get close.

So, I just finished a good chicken project that has solved my brooders space problem. I've had the chicks in big plastic tubs with dog crate panels over the tops. works fine, but I'm running out of room as they get bigger. The biggest ones are in a dog crate now with a perch and stuff. They're gong out to the coop tonight. I think we're done with night time temperatures in the teens for the rest of the year now. I'll give them some deep straw to snuggle in and they should be ok. But that still left me with the problem for the other 7, meat chicks coming soon, and just getting ready to fire up the incubator (whew! that's a lot of chicks!). So I started digging around... because I sure didn't want to buy anything...

We live in a house that was flooded in hurricane Irene. It's a work in progress. The previous owners left piles of flood wrecked items in the garage. Getting a dumpster for those is on the list for this spring, but hasn't happened yet. So I dug around and found an old buffet or sideboard. a tall table with two layers of drawers and long legs. looked like a good rebuild to me! Dug around for some construction odds and ends...

the bare bones done. Ready for hardware cloth and trim. More helpers....

All done except a door on the bottom level. I don't have hinges or a latch for that yet. Maybe cochin bantam baby and the EE are happily installed in the top. the only new item in this is the latch, and the hardware cloth. I had both of those hanging around, but because I used them on this will have to buy additional for another project. It's not even an eye sore. Pretty pleased with myself. Even more pleased that DH bought me a set of nailguns and a pancake compressor for christmas! all the face trim and stapling the hardware cloth was a snap with the nailer, and as an added bonus I didn't nail any fingers with the hammer....

bulldogma, so glad your daughter is home! continuing to pray for a speedy recovery.

Off to catch up on housework.... I was sick, then working on the new brooder, then this morning the plumbing under the sink exploded... and yeah. I need to do housework.

ok, I just want to say that I don't understand how people can dose their hens with oil with just one hand! Maybe it is a good sign that the bo is strong enough to fight me. I had oil all over me, the towels, and hardly any on her except....her beak, which just made it harder to try to pry it open.

I massaged her crop, and we will just have to wait and see. I might try the oil fight one more time.

AFL...maybe your kiddos don't have a problem at all! Maybe it's just like you said that they are messy and didn't wipe well

!!!!!

And...here I go again...

I guess what I'm wondering is - if they're not acting sick, maybe it's just their "norm"? Several of the folks here are saying they notice a little dirty on the bottoms on a regular basis...

I know I have one or 2 that seem to have a little on the back side but their vents are okay and they're otherwise healthy it seems. I keep thinking about how people used to advise us not to be looking at the poop constantly and worrying about every little thing and wondering if it may be one of those things that we have heard so much about gleet, etc., that we're concerned when we don't need to be?

Now...again...I'm just "thinking out loud" so I don't know...just wondering...

Do you think you could take a photo that some of the folks here with longer experience could take a look and let us know what they think? Maybe this will be a learning thing for all of us!!

Sounds like she's going broody! Silkies are notorious for it, and fantastic mammas!!

LOVE it! Great work!!

LW - meant to tell you yesterday... Good luck on your new venture!!

I hope your business does well. If you find a great suburban for a steal, please let me know. It would be really great if it was located near me and not you too :)
Also how is your female dog, the one you thought the wild dog might have impregnated? We had a neighbor's golden retriever break into our yard a while back. I quickly got the owners to come and get it but not before my children saw it. They so want a dog. It reminded me of your dog's possible puppies.

She had 7 puppies 2 days ago. 3 white, 4 brown. Unmistakeably his. Free in 8 weeks.
