The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Eggcessive, thank-you for responding. I knew I should have quarantined her but I Had no idea for how long. I guess I was just excited and she seemed healthy so I didn't.quarantine....a.bad decision I know....hope this one doesn't bite me in the butt:( I didn't see watery eyes or funny nose so I thought it was just environmental...its been raining cats and dogs for 2 weeks straight, and.COLD..... the hen seems fine now and nobody else is showing any symptoms. I can't get the.link to work.

No offense taken. I was just repeating what others have said. Heck I figure even my dogs probably have worms with all they eat outside

but have no problems since they are healthy. Heck I figure even people have worms of some sort lol

99% of dogs have round worm and it is passed down from mother to pup. This is why they say to worm your dogs yearly. I took vet tech and had to learn about all parasites what they do. Which ones we can catch, species specific etc etc.

You are not the first to do this, so hopefully things will turn out okay. There are some things like infectious bronchitis (IB) that just cause sneeze and a bit of nasal secretions--adult hens usually do okay, but it can wipe out chicks. The bit about quarantine is also to not bring in lice and mites to your other chickens. By the way, welcome to the thread.

So being a vet tech. Do all dogs have round worms or other harmful worms all the time even if treated properly? If so why would a vet say no?

Thank you! Would it hurt them if I did the large amounts for a few days, just in case, and then ease back on it? I try to free range thm for a few hours every day, sometimes they get out all day, so it varies on how much they eat
Chop the garlic grind the seeds dried not baked and mix in the ff.  Hot pepper if the birds actually have worms lots if for prevention not so much also mixed if ff. Hard to say how much without knowing size of food batches.

Worms naturally occur and can be harmless(Depending on species),For roundworm or like some were talking about coccidiosis Its when they get into a high ammount that they can prove harmfull(Which can happen in a time of stress or if an animal is immuno compromised as well as if they are kept in unclean conditions). What they mean when they say no worms is usually that none are coming out in the fecal exam.(Usually needs to have three fecal floats within a certain timeframe to be 100% sure on being clear of worms) Some worms, worming removes them untill they contract them again(Tape and such). But with roundworm once you have it, you have it for life so it just removes the large amount of worms(Overpopulation if you will) Which removes some of the stress off the animal. Im oversiplifying but Its been ten years since I took my course :).

That is how I did it. I raise my own peppers (jalapeno, habanero and Salerno)though and grind them in the blender. I feed about the equivalent of a can of Cayenne or black pepper mixed it with about 1 and 1/2 to 2 gallons of FF,
I used Cayenne on the neighbors and we ended up confining and I guess you could say making them eat it. They wanted nothing to do with it. They finally got hungry enough to eat it and then did not have a problem eating it the next feeding.
The stuff I grind gets eaten like sweet candy though and it is hotter than what you can buy at the store.

Why can't we find the round worms when we clean the chickens then? Even if we are looking for them. They are a pretty good size worm. I am not disputing this really raises my curiosity.

So busy with the gardens, flocks, and chicks I have very little time to come on here lately. Holy Carp! I was 158 posts behind!

They are growing(chicks) faster than I can keep up with. There is a big poultry show that I wanted to see this weekend but husband and I are still trying to finish a pen and pop doors on the barn so I can move some chicks. It seems like I am spending a lot of time feeding and watering so today getting new systems in place to make this chore easier and faster is high on the agenda. I missed the show but there will be others.

There sure has been a lot of good stuff shared here the last day or two. First time necropsy pictures are so valuable for learning. Good job on that Lala. Not only did you learn a lot but by sharing you taught many others. I agree with del on the fat encased organs. Failure all the way around for that bird.

That gorgeous fantasy flock image was beautiful! Not my fantasy but truly beautiful set up. Love that green pasture.

So many new folks. Love it! Great to hear from so many.

Now...Back outside to help hubby with the building and try to move a couple dozen chicks by this afternoon. Turkeys will be arriving in a couple weeks. No time to lose.
