The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I have a chicken laying eggs the size of a Robin's egg. Not every day just about 1 a week. Any ideas what is causing this? I know she has been laying a while as I have gotten an egg from every bird several times over the past month and a half.

Let me clear the dog situation up lol We have had our neighbor that speaks Spanish & English tell the neighbors with the dogs to keep them in their yard SEVERAL times. They apparently don't care. They will be shot the next time the come on our land. They only come on our land to eat chickens... This is 8 chickens they have killed and they have hurt 2. No more. We have secured our run more to help while we aren't there but if we see them it's a done deal as far as I'm concerned.

Would maggots be considered animal protein? If so, there is a thread or post somewhere around here for that. Basically hang some rotten meat out.... downwind of the house.... perfect for Countrygirl if she can situate it so that it blows toward the privacy fence..... til the maggots come and the birds scarf them up.... then dump the remains and the birds eat it too.
I've heard of getting a 5 gal bucket, put some little holes in the bottom... hang it up, with the Dead Thing inside, and the lid on - the lid keeps the stink down, and the maggots fall out the holes for the chickens.
I will kill your dog in spanish.
I just woke up so this tickled me "I will kill your dog in Spanish."

In Idaho livestock rule. If you run into an animal on the road you can be sued for the value of the animal even if it destroyed your car and injured/killed anyone in your vehicle.
If you threaten to kill or injure livestock you are in the wrong. If your pet does damage to them, you are responsible for them.
The reason is that livestock can not be expected to be able to defend themselves. I would imagine that most states that have any agricultural base would have similar laws.
