The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

BlueMouse, I didn't notice the earlier post so I'll ask here. Is she eating & drinking like the others? Have you tried giving her treats (mealworms, fruit, etc) & see how she responds to them? Checked her over for mites, ticks, fleas?

Is she running around outside of the coop, resting in the shade, scratching at the ground - basically acting like a normal chicken otherwise? Is your rooster (if you have one) paying her extra attention, or another hen driving her off constantly?

How does her feces look? Watery, mucusy, what colour?

She seems to be eating and drinking normally, foraging around with the others/dustbathing/acting like a normal chicken. Certainly convinced she's dying when I feed in the evening at close up time and gobbles right down. I call her over for bugs when I garden and she zooms them right up. She's one of my only two adult hens, and the other one is broody, so she's looking a little rough since she's the only hen available for cassanova to express his love (except if he can catch my 18 week Cuckoo Marans, which isn't often.) She lays me a jumbo egg every day. She's certainly not getting picked on since she is the undisputed queen of the coop.

I picked her up the other day to have a look over because she was looking a little thin. I was alarmed by how prominent her keelbone seems, she looks almost triangular from the fornt if you know what I mean? I gave her a good check over, didn't see any kind of mites or fleas, I checked the bases of her feathers, nothing, checked her face for ticks, nothing. Had a good look at her vent, no smell, vent seemed clean. This hen has had an on and off poopy butt for the last six weeks or so, I just assumed that it was just sort of part of having the extra poofy buff orpington trousers, since it didn't seem extreme, and there's no foul odor/whiteness around the vent like in gleet. Her droppings seem normal to me, greenish brown with a white cap. She does throw of cecal poops, but I think that's relatively normal?

I only feed once a day in the evening, and not a whole lot, but they have four acres of free range available, including almost an acre of yard. Everyone else seems in good condition. Their crops don't seem stuffed when they come in at night, but neither does anyone else seem to be losing weight, and the younglings are growing apace (well, Except Eliza. She's still relatively the size of a powder puff, but then again she's a bantam.) I'm just confused. Heck. Even my broody looks like she's in better condition.

Daughter was upset... but daughter is in the autism spectrum with an OCD comorbid condition of kleptomania. She was given numerous chances and finally told if the stealing continued her rooster was going bye-bye. (This particular roo crowed all night and the neighbors were complaining... we were going to move him around to the back side of the large barns if my daughter had been able to control her impulses, but no... )

*sigh*

Unfortunately there is no cure for true kleptomania. It's a mental illness.
Irony? Her father (DH) is a corrections officer at a large prison.

The DC were eating us out of house and home. DH finally said he wanted me to pick ONE breed to focus on, so I chose SFH, H/RIR, PRs and Silkies. (I think I did pretty good...) LOL - sold the DC at a big swap in May. We go through so much less feed now!!

SFH are my main focus. I'm picking up 2 SFH roos that came from Greenfire Farm on Wednesday!
I'm sorry, this is just the epitome of chicken math

DH says pick one so you narrowed down to four? I am busting a gut here, I know you are focusing on SFH and I don't blame you I think they are lovely, just the numbers got me laughing so hard :)

Maybe bringing her in for an extra treat feeding separated from the flock in the morning would help. If you bring her in the house a morning or two and feed her goodies (whatever you have on hand) and see how hungry she is it will help determine whether it's an availability problem.

broody question..does everyone just leave mama and the babies in the coop with everyone else? or take them somewhere else? a sectioned off area isn't really an option at this point.

People do various things .... Some move them to a fenced off area. I didn't have room so I built a wire lean to around her nest box which was hilarious because I realized after the fact that the dividers between the nest boxes don't go all the way up ... I watched as the other chickens went to check out the new mom and my ameraucana just walked over and stuck her head in to get a look at what was going on

The next hens I just left alone and they were fine... I have heard horror stories but I have been lucky... Good hens!!!

Could she have worms??? That is the only thing that would explain it ..... give her some pumpkin seeds, garlic, cayenne etc etc see if that helps and I would give her special feeding extra protein to see if you can encourage her to put on weight!

LM's OMG have I got broodies for you!!! Just when I thought I was down to 3!!! (2 silkies and my very determined Orpington!!!) My black silkie went broody, My sizzle went broody & my 1/2 ameraucana x silkie went broody!!! Not to mention the last few days my Blue Wheaton Ameraucana has been acting really weird clucking puffing up fighting with everyone. I couldn't figure out what was going on ... Well the light bulb went off when Ninja came out from her broody nest to eat and was clucking away as broody hens do ... Thing is this Ameraucana started the broody behavior before actually sitting on the nest ... Well today she didn't get off the nest.... DUH!!!! I have an older Ameraucana who has never gone broody so I thought maybe they weren't the broody type... hahahahaha!! WRONG! I am up to 7 Broodies! S E V E N !!!! I don't need or want any more chickens!!!! Poor things they so want to be mamas!!!

My orpington Tank has been broody since early March!!! I think one of the Silkies too ... I'll have to check my notes .... I thought Tank was going to snap out of it as she started getting off the nest first thing in the morning to eat with the girls but that only lasted a few days and it seems she has a new resolve ... Not sure how I am going to break these guys ...

@jeepgirl13: I originally bought two bottles. I used them to make three gallons using plain Apple Cider vinegar and frozen apple jucice concentrate. I put a folded coffee filter over the opening secured with a hair band. I haven't had to buy it since. It's time to start another gallon using starter from one of the jugs.

@BDM: Your chicken math cracked me up! Hah!

Talking broodies: Judy the Broody hatched one little White Catdance chick! The others were infertile. This is my first Catdance chick hatched from my trio.

Remember my little crippled hen that Karen Larson gave me for a forever home? I nearly lost her from shavings caught in her trachea over the winter. Another one of The Weirdness deals here. Well....She went broody on five eggs. Bless her little heart. She can barely cover those five eggs and I see them sticking out all the time. It will be surprising if any hatch. Bonney (the Catdance pullet I bought keeps laying an egg in Dumplings nest everyday and I have to remove it everyday. *sheesh!* I removed the two Silkie roos and put them in a bachelor pen because they would take turns stomping all over this little crippled hen while she was in her nest. I would really love to have something normal happen here soon. Just give me one normal Silkie broody and I'll be happy. Judy the Broody doesn't seem to know what to do with her tiny little Silkie chick. It can't follow her like the others could. She is forever losing this chick in the deep litter. If it survives, it will surprise me. It's made it through a week and she is feeding it ff. That's good.

I love this time of year. Spent all day at the Farmers Tilth and made a lot of lettuce selling lettuce. Lots of people wanted to buy chickens and took my name and number. No one had a place to keep the young pullets so no takers. The word is getting out that I'm a source for free ranged, local chickens.
