The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

3 eggs in lockdown right now, 1 pipped. These are ducklings.
we have brown eggs from our RIR hens. These are white eggs, larger than our chicken eggs, and take longer to hatch. Still DH has not asked hey where did you get the white eggs and why are they bigger than our brown eggs. Dh does not mess with the little chicks a whole lot. Everyonce in a while he will look into the brooder. I'm wondering how long until I have to mention that I hatched a duck or two. I'm hoping to make it to the holiday during a fireworks show. He is not against the ducks, I just forgot to mention it. Then it became a game of how long until he sees the eggs are white. We did look at the ducks together in the store so it will not be a complete shock.
The white eggs I got from Stony are slightly smaller than our RIR eggs and he has not noticed those either but he knows there are Sumatra eggs in the incubator. Still I think with them in there he would be asking more questions like why white and why are some very very large while others are not.
He is in for a couple of surprises over the next week to 10 days.

My poor back yard is under water..I have been digging ditches all day. I am not liking all of this heat and rain..it is so muggy and sticky. I broke down and turned on the air. I was heating the house a few weeks ago and now i am cooling. My poor electric bill.

I think my other broody hatched out all 6 eggs. I will find out in the next few days. Tons of cheeping going on. That is 7 broodys already this year. I have only three chickens that have not gone broody. Crazy year already.

I'd love a hand! I've checked out poop charts, can't find this! 15 girls about 20-22 weeks old. We've gotten 2-3 eggs (just started Mon) went outside yesterday and found the picture below. I don't know if it's poop or vomit, there's probably 3-4 of these piles..when I scoop from the poop board it all looks normal! No one seems to be acting off.. We ferment feed, UACV in water, pumpkin seeds for treats..

Totally got the giggles over your post!

I was just wondering that myself. Finally got caught up after being gone for the weekend.
Hmmm... probably... elsewhere...

It's hard to keep tabs on everyone and everything.

Boo on the back yard, but hooray on the broody hatch!!

Looks like mostly urates. Keep an eye and see who is drinking more than usual... and if you don't see these poops again, stop worrying about it.

For now..do not worry. If you see it again tomorrow..let us know. Check your protein levels this time of year. They need less grain protein (12-15%) plus 2-5% meat protein.

I feel your pain. That was my yard for the last month. It finally dried up but more torrential rains on the way. I am going to rent a ditch digger and try to get the water to drain to a culvert at the end of my yard. It's the only way I will ever get the coop back where I want it.

Tots did well with big girls today. Not to many battles. Of course they are usually roosting by now but are bunched up by the people gate. Edie was in her old run. Apparently she flew the coop :). I put her in the big coop on a roost & she got off and was running around. She roosted again so I am hopeful the other tots figure out where she is and go in the coop. I think they probably won't and I will be grabbing them after dark to put them in the coop.

And on a happy note I bagged 16 bags of grass clippings today. 1 bag a month means 4 months of grass clippings for the winter. I put holes in the sides of the bags and they are drying nicely. They are in the little coop to protect them fom the rain. And I figured out a large kitchen garbage bag fits perfectly in the grass clipping collector tote. Med baggi it so much easier & me less itchy :). Even put a few tote fulls in the big coop and all the chickens had fun digging thru the clippings :)

They're on Purina Layer that we ferment. They get veggie and fruit scraps. They free range and have access to water. If I do see this again (I mean it's huge in size too- like 10") what should I be looking at?

Quote: I am not a vet..and this is just my opinion

my first instinct said..Gout...many poultry that come from hatchery's end up with hereditary gout and can't take large grain proteins. If you have the time, you might want to read about gout in hatchery chickens. I doubt yours have it so young, but education is priceless.
