The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Need some help! Came home to find 1 of my 20 week leghorns on the floor of the coop with a shrunken comb, panting, very lethargic, and not supporting her own weight. My first thought was dehydration. She's in the dog crate in the garage. She has taken some molasses water & electrolyte water--seems to be napping a lot. She pooped--pretty watery. She was fine yesterday. OMG just realized I never offered her food! I'll be back!

Yes it is an awesome product. I spent double the price of the product in shipping alone and still don't regret it. I originally bought it because one of my birds had a fungal infection in the lungs. Cleared it up in two days. He was the only one who had the infection. He spent an odd amount of time at the neighbour's place, so who knows what he got into. Anyway.. It was great.

I think it's very important to have on hand for people who show.
How did you administer it for the fungal infection...was it by vaporizer? How long, how much...details, please.

Thank you aoxa and Leahs mom. Truly.

I don't always have these kinds of funds available for this kind of thing, but I kind of feel like after forty years, my chick house should really get a good going over. It's NEVER been disinfected. It cost me $21 for a gallon of Oxine and $10 shipping and handling. It will last me a decade for sure. I bought one can of Tek trol aerosol in 1993. I still have that can. It's half full. I used it today to disinfect my incubator that just hatched the Silkies. I don't like the smell of it. I don't like aerosol period. But a twenty year old can still in use is kind of impressive.

I won't use it in my barn except for emergencies but I do want it in case I show this Fall. I also want it for various uses in the car and house.

I will read everything I can on the link before using.

She has no interest in FF, blueberries or grapes. Still panting. Pooped again watery & tann-ish almost looks like intestinal lining. Not moving so don't think it's worms. Tried to get a picture but couldn't manage a good one. Got a little more electrolyte water into her. Left a small cup of that & the food offerings in with her. The only thing I fed different to them today was some apple slices that were in the fridge and some homemade bread crusts (baked yesterday). There was no mold on either item. Any thoughts?

humidifier. We put him in a big kennel, covered with sheets heavily, right over the humidifier which was blowing the water/oxine into the kennel for 48 hours. He stopped rasping after 48 hours and we kept him in there (with humidifier) for another 2 days to be sure it did it's job.

How much.. I can't remember the dosage, but I got it on one of the websites you posted.

what are the temperatures like?

It was 78 today with a nice breeze. She was on the floor of the coop which was around 72, pop-door open & people door open so nice cross breeze on the floor. It's 67 tonight but she's in the garage so it might be 70 in there. Could she be egg bound? I honestly am not sure if she's laying yet or not.

Hi all - Lovin' these cooler nights! We get used to sleeping with the air on so it's hard to sleep with it off.
Even with Mom still in the hospital, now with pneumonia in both lungs, I'm taking a few hours off this week end to build a pen just for the boys. I have way too many roosters but don't want to send them to freezer camp just yet. Armorfirelady, you can be assured that George is on duty now. He and dear old dad are rivals but he's not been able to convince the ladies. I'm thinking George might be the better choice. He doesn't have quite the color as Wrinkles.
The Twisted Sisters actually hatched a chick but I snatched it and brought in with 3 others that finished incubating in the house. Ths lonely one is the only EE that I allowed to finish hatching.
I did a horrible thing. I smelled some awful smell from the incubator, so I put the eggs aside and quickly cleaned the bottom tray and put it all back, not thinking about the bleach smell. It wasn't very strong but It killed the 4 eggs.
Can anyone tell me how many chicks can a Sizzle mother at one time? She has 5 and does a great job. Would 4 more be too many? Tomorrow or Saturday night I'm going to try adding these 4 to her brood.
