The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Quote:
I just lost a chicken that I think was from eating styrofoam. They managed to make a hole to get under the porch where we had put recycled sheets of slab styrofoam and the dog pulled a couple down. The chickens thought it was lunch, I guess. By the time I found it, it looked like it had snowed.
Are you sure it's from that? My birds have eaten plenty and never fell ill. Now I make sure not to have any around at all.

One afternoon my birds ate a hole through a styrofoam kick board that fell out of our pool before we even knew it had fallen out. Couldn't have been more than forty minutes. I don't understand, why styrofoam either.
It's a chicken thing. Maybe the texture?

Aoxa if you click on the spoiler can you see anything? I've tried several times and no luck

No I'm not 100% sure especially since all my bids were in it and it looks like it's been a while. But she hadn't been sick and I thought about opening her up and checking but I had too much on my mind with Mom's release from the hospital after 2 long months and the 2 cats being so sick and cleaning poop and vomit all day after the one. If another had died I would have definitely checked them. Little Red was another of my older hens and has been the 3rd one I've lost this summer. These 3 hens were over 4 years and 2 of them were looking less than good. In 2 hours the cats will be gone and my mother will be home. For some reason I'm feeling the same foreboding feeling for both events.

I saw the Chicken post on your FB late last night Axoa. First thing this morning, after picking up chicks from the PO, I was out there catching me a hen. My hens got somewhat close after they were done trying to get away. Tonight I try a rooster. I noticed that there were no pretty roosters in the commercial. It got me thinking maybe only the hens can do it.

Have you guys ever heard of a chicken's vestibulo-ocular reflex?

I have never heard of it until yesterday and find it absolutely fascinating!

Pay attention to the head. It stays stable while the body is moved. Mercedes Benz did this commercial, and I think it's the best car commercial of all time hands down.

ETA: Make sure you have sound!

Yep. We humans do that too, but because our eye to head size ratio is so much larger it isn't as noticeable. Until it goes awry. And then Oh Boy! Problems! The eyes will try to readjust balance by flicking back and fourth, leading to an extremely unplesant spinning sensation. Some folks may know it from a time when they've had too much alcohol. Myself, I (probably?) have Ménière's disease, so I can be stone cold sober and that feeling will wash over me. Not fun.

But the video was awesome. Thanks. :) Love them chickens!

Yes I know exactly the feeling. My pupils try to focus on weird things when I am anxious. They grow large and smaller and large again. The neurologist thought I might have MS. Thank goodness I didn't. It was stress. Actually was off for almost 6 months. I felt vertigo constantly. When I got the chickens it went away. They helped my stress. I get it off and on when too much is going on. Like around the time of the fire, when too many people are around me, or during tax season. It's an off putting feeling for sure! Feels like a constant inner ear infection!
