The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

Thank you, she has been doing fabulously. It happened monday, I think her stitches will be ready to take out tomorrow.
She lets me clean out without fuss. shes a champ! And an egg everyday through it all!
Good to hear! Hope the re-integration goes well

Quote: That's got to be funny. I had a Sheltie that we'd take to Lake MI and she'd try to bite the waves coming in to the shore. She would run and bark at them and try to bite them like they were some kind of intruder.

If I didn't rein her in she would have done it all down the beach until she exhausted herself. Craziest thing to watch.

I think I'm going to be gone for a week. Not sure if I'll read everything to catch up.... If anyone wants to try to catch me for anything you can try PM.

So Sunday morning coffee time with the chickens... The squirrels were going crazy. Calling from tree to tree. I haven't heard the hawks this morning so I couldn't figure out if they were saying snack or come play or sounding an alarm. As they wouldn't stop it sounded like an alarm. My girls were in the yard huddle under a tree but they started clucking at squirrels. So I got up to investigate. Well guess what I found 30 ish feet away in the dry creek bed?? A coyote!!! I threw a big rock at it and it ran off but the squirrels still haven't settled down and the girls, now back in their run, are still on edge. Ahhhh urban living.

Delisha it looks girlish to me - has it ever pecked at your fingers? Someone once tipped me off to only male youngsters pecking at my hands, and so far that's been dead on. Any chick that has pecked at my hands has been male.
LOL well, iv'e got a bantam blrw x cochin cross pullet that's constantly going for my fingers, the dog's nose, flies, anything that comes in range. but I think it's more of an 'is it edible?' type response than aggression.

You need to have a gun handy......being able to walkup that close to a coyote isn't right.

Recycling all our pumpkins! Does anyone know if you can cut them up and freeze some sections for the winter? Someone just offered us a freezer so I'll have room to put extra things away.

I'm sure there are some pullets that do so looking for food, just saying so far young chicks that peck at my fingers - not looking for food - have all been males.

Yes, you can freeze them. And the chickens will like the pumpkin even better for having been frozen - freezing it brings out the sugars in it! They go nuts for it!
