I'm sorry to ask so many questions, but I'm new (started in March).
What is culling?

culling is euthanizing or putting down or killing - you cull for lots of reasons, including putting an ailing chicken out of its misery, or getting rid of excess chickens. Sometimes it is used to refer to the process of culling out the worst of the breed/flock so you can improve the flock by breeding the best.

everyone asks questions, its the only way any of us can learn anything!

it is hardly cold here yet, in the 10's but booster the rooster has a bad case of frostbite. I've never ever had a frostbite problem - maybe an occasional tiny tip of a comb, but this is about the top fourth of the comb, being purple, and a white area below that.

This doesn't bode well for the winter for Booster.

I know it isn't too much moisture as the windows are open and there is no moisture buildup. Think he just doesn't put his head under the wing (is this something roosters just don't do?).

Gonna be almost zero tomorrow night. poor baby.

ah duh! it was the windchill during the day! I was forgetting how windy it has been and forgot about the windchill.

Oklahoma, not your level of cold for sure, but still wayyyyyyy to cold for me!


I keep coming back to this thread hoping for some update, seriously hoping for the best for her and her birds!!

I'm so worried about Del and her flock it's driving me batty! I just can't imagine... and it's not her fault! Moldy feed can be hard to detect. It is usually an issue with the storage of the feed before it is sold.

I also have a bird with frostbite. She evidently went to bed on the coldest night so far with a bloody comb and it froze. My nicest girl, too! There are so many possible reasons they can get frostbite...

poor girl! I think I may have frostbite! my fingers and toes are totally frozen from having to lock up my 'free ranging' horse... she's decided to start eating the neighbor's landscaping apparently.

on a positive note, 14 SFH eggs from Leigh's bunch went in the hatcher today... several have already gone into drawdown, they're due Friday. (yes, I don't do lockdown till day 19 usually).

and some side-hope that it warms the *bleep* up soon! I need to finish my pens so i can get these "babies" outside! I've got way too many sfh in the brooder who are starting to crow! (hatched September 16th & October 13th)
